The fourteen-year-old stood next to his mother at the ice cream parlor.

Tobee and his mother both ordered vanilla ice cream; five dollars each.

Tobee ate the ice cream in silence.

"Are you crying again, Tobee? Please don't say it's about that girl."

Tobee continued eating his ice cream, biting the cone.

"Tobee, I'm talking to you. What's going on?"

The boy chewed the last bit, swallowing.

He glared at his mother. "Stop disrespecting my friend."

He heard his mother scoff.

"She seems like a scummy girl who's only out for—"

"Don't talk about her like that, Mom. She needs help."

"Yeah, help from—"

"I think she's suicidal."

Tobee and his mother stared at each other.

"I don't know, though." Tobee said. "The last reply that I've gotten from her is that she thinks she's going to die. I don't know what that means."

The mother raised an eyebrow. "You have a suicidal friend?"

Tobee shrugged.

He threw the piece of cone in the trash can, walking away.

He heard his mother call for him, but the boy kept walking.

He texted Alison that he was coming over to her house, whether she liked it or not.

"No friend leaves a friend in the dust." he whispered to himself.

As Tobee walked, he noticed a homeless man on the sidewalk.

"Hey, are you okay?"

The man looked at the boy, smiling. "Yeah. I'm a little poor, you know?"

He shook the tin can of nickels.

"I have five dollars, if you want it."

The man nodded, taking the dollar. "Thank you, sir."

Tobee nodded, looking at the blue sky.

"Have you heard about the zombies that are coming?"

Tobee looked at the man. "Yeah. It's scary."

"I know. One day they'll come here and grab you, I'm betting. It's getting to be a scary world."

Tobee nodded, unnerved.

He thought that he should walk away...

"Did you know that the zombies feed off of fear and sadness? I saw it on the news yesterday."

"What?"

Tobee's nose was inches from the ground.

He felt a hand grab his neck, pulling him, and felt a fuzzy sensation cover his mouth.

Tobee's heart was speeding, but he felt his body slowing.

His eyes felt weak.

His hands were numb.

His head slumped into someone's chest.

He heard a faint screaming...
