There I kneeled.

I had failed. Gaea had awoken, and Leo was gone. The ship had exploded in a massive fireball.

We were doomed.

I saw Thalia struck down by a stray arrow.

Nico, skewered by a centaur while trying to save Will.

Jason blown away in seconds, and Piper dying of the shrapnel from the grenade.

Hazel exhausted herself, and Frank sacrificed himself, defending her. His head was bitten off by a hellhound.

One by one, my friends fell to the endless onslaught of monsters.

And now, Annabeth. Her heart stabbed through an Empousai. My sword was behind me, dropped in a pile of gold dust that was said Empousai.

I cradled her body as the fight raged around me. I heard screams, laughter, and just the faintest sound of sorrow.

And I heard a voice behind me.

"Are you too far gone to fight me, Storm?" Gaea asked.

I saw her in the reflection of Annabeth's cold, dead eyes.

Gaea looked at me, disappointed.

"And here I thought you were the one of the prophecy. Maybe it was the conflicted Jason, or, more likely, it was supposed to be the clever Leo Valdez. But both are gone now. Both killed by explosions. Fitting, isn't it?"

I continued to stare at her through Annabeth's eyes.

"What? Too broken to answer?" She asked.

I nodded and slowly stood up, cradling Annabeth's body in my arms. I turned to Gaea and stared directly in her eyes.

"Go fuck yourself."

My sword laying in the dust behind her zooms towards me, skewering her in the process.

She looked down in shock at the sword piercing through her body.

"H-how did -" She started to ask.

I stared into her eyes, unfeeling, watching as silver blood started to pour from her mouth.

"Little known fact about my sword, but it was created by a water deity, and contains the immortal essence of said deity's daughter. It is partly comprised of water, meaning I can control it. I usually don't because it seems like cheating, but..."

My eyes flashed with anger. "You deserve to be killed, no matter how it happens."

She grasped the tip of the sword and tried to push it out. I simply shook my head.

"That's not going to work. I'm keeping it there, slowly letting the Celestial Bronze kill you from the inside."

She stared at me in shock.

"You were never supposed to... how did you... you were just a pawn!" She yelled.

I continued to stare at her, unfeeling.

"Pawns can still checkmate. They just need something else, like a rook, or a sword."

She took unbalanced steps towards me until she reached about an arms length away, the blade almost touching Annabeth.

"Do you understand what you could have had? If you just joined me, or left the fight?" She asked softly.

I nodded. "Yes. But I know what the right thing to do is."

"What? Protect the creatures that have been slowly destroying me for decades?" She retorted.

I nod. "Yes. You would kill everyone, including innocents. I can't let that stand."
