In the night, Jacko wanted to get some milk to quench his thirst. As he stepped out of bed and walked slowly, and as quietly as he could, over the creaky floorboards to step down the slopping staircase, he was pulled back by his own instincts, as the front door opened widely and a clumsy looking Colt stumbled in.
Ted immediately appeared from the other room and paced over to him strictly, where he put his finger to his lips to shh him, and he sarcastically imitated Ted's attempt to calm him.
He was being weird and stupid and abnormal, Jacko thought to himself as he slowly followed them down the hall and rested next to the front room doorway.
Colt flopped onto the couch and Ted leaned on the arm of it.
"What do you think you're doing, you idiot?!" Ted exclaimed in a sort of shout whisper, Which Jacko always did when he was angry but didn't want anyone to hear except the annoying person that made him angry.
"Look, you don't understand, you've always been the golden boy, dad loves you better than all of us." Colt slurred, he felt like he wasn't worth the trouble of Ted's care, but his brother thought otherwise.
Jacko wondered whether That was true, he didn't think dad had favourites, it made him sad as he didn't understand why he wouldn't be his favourite.
"Look mate, I'm leaving very soon, and I don't know whether I will come back or not, so you're gonna have to man up and take the roll as the older brother now, you've got Kass and Jacko to look after and they really need you at the moment." Ted had tears welling up in his eyes as he kneeled down by Colt's side.
Colt groaned as he brought himself to a sitting position, his hair flopped naturally over his eyes, and he brushed it back to get a proper look at Ted's emotional state.
"Oh pull yourself together mate," Colt frowned, he had no pity for Ted's feelings, and Jacko found that quite repulsive, as he wanted so badly to tell Ted that everything was okay, but he couldn't because his brother and father wouldn't approve of him out of bed at such a time.
"After all" Colt continued "you're a soldier now." He wobbled his head slightly and gave a hissing noise of disapproval as he picked himself up and stumbled to a cupboard in the kitchen, he opened the refrigerator and pulled out a glass bottle of milk.
This was exactly what Jacko wanted, so he slid himself onto his feet and stood unnoticed in the doorway.
"Don't drink all of that." He called as Colt began pouring the milk into his glass, Jacko wondered towards the kitchen, and forgetting he was barefooted, he stepped onto the cold cobble-tiles on the kitchen floor.
He hated the feeling, as the chills went up his spine, of the cobbles on his feet, it made him wince silently.
"What are you doing up." Colt leaned against the work tops to stabilise himself, he felt awfully dizzy. He scrunched up his nose and stroked his hand down his face, Ted got up and put his arms around him, after all, he was his little brother.
"Let's take you upstairs, to bed, and you kiddo." Ted muttered.
Colt tried to shrug him off, and whilst failing to do that, the glass smashed on the floor and the milk spilled all over the chilling cobbles.
Jacko looked up as Ted tried to keep hold of Colt. He looked as if he were to collapse, so Jacko did an honourable thing.
"I'll tidy, you get Colt to bed, I'll be fine." Jacko nodded.
"Alright mate, you be up in a bit, mind." Ted slowly walked Colt out the room and up the stairs.
Jacko peered over the milk and smashed glass, a minuscule shard had splintered his toe, and it stung badly.
"Well, no point crying over spilt milk." Jacko reassured himself, he gave a small giggle, as he always thought, he was made to be a comedian.
After he mopped up the milk and brushed the small shards under the cabinets in the kitchen, he made his way to the staircase.
He felt as if his heart would stop as Kassie unexpectedly appeared, sat at the top of the stairs.
"Ugh, I'm sleeping with you tonight, I'm not dealing with that sh- stupidity." Kassie almost forgot that she was talking to a 9 year old, and it was unnecessary.
Jacko frowned, then stepped foward to sit next to her.
"I hate everything that's going on right now, Ted leaving, Colt coming home dizzy and stupid, for no apparent reason, and mom and dad arguing, it sucks." Jacko sighed.
Kassie put her arm around his shoulders and hugged him closely to her chest. He liked this, he hadn't been hugged in what felt like forever.
"It will get better." She comforted him.
"You promise?"
"I promise."
