"Hmm?" came her father's voice from behind the door. His voice was deadened by more than the door. Something wrenched in her chest. He had been so good this morning.

"Can I come in, Dad?" Evan asked. Her hand grazed the doorknob but didn't twist it.

There was a little rustling and Evan heard a few pillows thump to the floor. "Sure, come on in sweets."

Evan slid around the door and closed it behind her. "How was your day, Dad?" she asked. The brightness in her voice was searing in the fusty air. Like a white laser burning through dense fog.

He chuckled humourlessly. "Same old, same old."

Evan drew in a breath through her nose. The air felt too heavy in her lungs.

"Never mind me. How was your day? Meet any murderers?"

Her heart stopped before she realised it was a joke. She didn't laugh but Eric didn't seem to expect her to.

"It was alright."

She could tell him. He was different to Suzanne. Her mother might go to the police or even call the fabled 'Men in White Coats' to come along and whisk away her deranged, murderous, completely and utterly bonkers daughter. Eric might not even tell Suzanne.

But what would she say? 'You know that Maths teacher that got killed? Yep, yep, that was me. Your sweet daughter is a cold-blooded killer.' Evan held her eyes closed for a second longer than a blink. That was the very last thing that her father needed. What with all the-

"Your mother wants me to go to the doctor," said Eric, reading Evan's mind.

Evan perched on the edge of an overstuffed armchair. Something tiny but sharp was sticking out of the faded material. It pricked the back of her thighs. She put one hand to her mouth then lowered it again.

"Would... Would that be the worst thing? Dad?" she ventured. He said nothing but his face drooped a little. Evan pinched her lip. Hygiene could stuff itself.

Short wee chapter here but, hopefully, a meaningful one. I found Evan and her father's relationship to be a really poignant thing to explore.
