Halloween 1995

It was Halloween, the one night of the year that you could pretend to be anything or anyone you wanted, and nobody could judge you. Stu was having his yearly Halloween party. The Macher house would be decked out in halloween decorations, and everyone from school would be there. Costumes were required, and if you showed up without one, you'd be kicked out. It's only been a month since I found mom brutally murdered, but I need a distraction. I wasn't going to sit around and end up like my sister.

Sidney barely comes out of her room, and she hasn't talked to Billy all that much. When he does come over or when we convince her to hang out, she won't even let him hold her hand. I've seen the pain of rejection behind his eyes, and I've tried to talk to her about it, but she won't listen. She's so worried about turning out to be like mom. "Mom was a lying, cheating, whore, something you're not and never will be." She had slapped me for saying that. "Don't ever talk about mom like that ever again!"

I tried convincing her to come to the party, dress up and have fun, let loose a little. But she wouldn't open her bedroom door. The guy was caught and behind fucking bars. I don't know what more she wants. She can't grieve forever. But I wasn't going to let her drag me down with her. I was going to have fun tonight. Stu and I were dressed as Shaggy and Velma and Stu carried around a small stuffed Scooby-Doo. There were so many amazing costumes. Billy just showed up with a white tee-shirt covered in blood looking pissed off and annoyed.Tatum was a sexy pirate and Randy was dressed as Jimmy Carrey's, The Mask.

Everything was great, horror movies played on the TV, music was blaring through the house, food and drinks lined the kitchen counters. People danced and stood around talking, and just having a good time. Stu couldn't keep his hands off of me though, which isn't anything new. Him, Billy, and I were in the kitchen. I was sitting on the counter of the island facing the sink, Stu stood between my legs, hands resting on my hips. Bully stood beside us, beer in hand, and a scowl on his face.

"What the fuck is Sid's deal? What's going on with her?" Billy asked. "Our mom was just murdered a month ago, Billy. Not only that but she was raped before Cotton Weary stabbed her over and over and over. Then Sid and I were the ones to find her. That does shit to your head," I said. He scoffed, "And yet, you're here partying and acting like nothing happened. You don't pull away from Stu when he goes to hold your fucking hand." His voice was starting to raise, face getting red from how pissed off he was. His hand tightened around the beer bottle to the point I thought he might break it.

"Hey, man, relax. Forget about Sidney and just have fun," Stu told him, slapping his hand on his shoulder. Billy shrugged Stu's hand off his shoulder and walked away. Stu shook his head, turned fully to me, and wrapped his arms around my waist. He pulled me closer so I was flush against him and my ass was barely on the counter. "Zoniks! I think he's mad, Velma," He said in Shaggy's voice. I laughed, wrapped my arms around his neck and kissed him. "Jinkies, I think you're right, Shaggy."

"God, I fucking love you." He kissed me again, this time deepening it. He trailed his lips down my jaw to my neck. "We should go upstairs so I can do what I do best, Velma…eat." I hit his shoulder and looked around. "Oh, my god, Stu! Stop. We are not doing that with a house full of people!" He picked me up, throwing me over his shoulder and marched through the house, swerving through the crowd of our classmates until we were in the living room. The door that led directly to the living room was blocked with people so he took the long way. He set me down, sat on the couch, and pulled me onto his lap.

It wasn't until almost two in the morning when everyone left. We were all going to be tired as hell tomorrow for school. After everyone left, I helped Stu clean everything up before we headed upstairs. I was about to take my wig off when he stopped me. "Wait! Leave everything on, I wanna play." I raised my eyebrows and chuckled. "What?" I asked. "We have a mystery to solve," he said. I smiled at him before clearing my throat and looking at him with a straight face. "And what mystery would that be, Shaggy?" I asked, pushing the glasses up on my nose.
