You were in a rut.

Between the seemingly endless hours you worked at the old games store, the few hours a night you'd sleep and the in-between time that was mostly spent thinking and worrying and planning and saving, your life felt like a meaningless cycle. Goddamn, if your shitty calculations were correct, you'd either need to downsize or make some serious changes in order to get your life back on track.

Neither of those options were feasible, however, which only circled back to your current predicament, being stuck in a rut.

It was dark outside. You had no idea what time it may've been, your phone was dead and there were no clocks inside, but from the lack of people on the streets and roads and the position of the crescent moon in the sky, it was past midnight if you had to guess. Which was just perfect for you.

You couldn't help but groan. Let's hope you didn't miss the last bus back home because then it'd been an hour's walk till you reached your somewhat safe haven. It wasn't much, just a one-bedroom one-bathroom apartment in a not-so-nice area, but it was affordable and luckily the regular stray dogs you fed kept your apartment mostly clear from home invaders.

"Shit, I hope I'm not running late," You glanced out the window, fidgeting with the store keys. You'd slung your bag over your shoulder, fully prepared to run all the way to the bus stop when a bland something something caught your eye. It was a box, not too big and not very small, and for some reason, your name was scrawled messily on the side in a somewhat dry Sharpie.

"Huh..." That was odd. You didn't remember seeing this at all when you were cleaning up, and you wiped down the very surface the grungy box was resting on. Which, was, y'know... Suspicious at best and possibly paranormal at worst. And you did not get paid enough to deal with ghost shit.

However, this could potentially mean free stuff, and selling some of the potential stuff that may be free for a quick buck would make your life a little easier.

You peered in the box.

There wasn't much in there, mostly dirty cables frayed in some areas, copper glinting under the protective rubber casing. That didn't look too promising, much like the VR headset nestled amongst the curls of cables. You picked the tech up, watching as dust and dirt flaked from it like dead skin cells. You briefly considered sucking your teeth, but you did not want to get whatever was falling from the headset into your mouth.

Whatever. Maybe you could clean. You were fairly nifty with cables, so repairing those couldn't be too hard, right?

You just sighed and packed up the box, shifting it till it was snug under your arm. You were just too tired to care at this point. All you wanted to see in your future was your home and your nice warm bed, bar comfy because it was cheap. But it was better than nothing.
