(Beau's P.O.V.)
We've been driving for days now. City after city, town after town, our drive to a new beginning never seemed to have its end.
It was the same routine everyday.
We would stop for gas around 6am, buy energy drinks for Dallas and I, drive for another hour or two before stopping again for breakfast around 8am, then drive and drive until lunchtime. For lunch, we would try out little restaurants that we would pass by, and then we would get back on the road. Again. We would all eat some of the little snacks that I had packed for dinner, and then my boys and Damion would sleep through the night.
It was the same routine everyday.
So, this morning should be no different than yesterday, or the day before that, and as of right now, it wasn't any different.
Surprise surprise.
I had stopped the car at a small gas station that was by the road, and I refilled the tank. It was really early in the morning so, I didn't expect any of the boys to be awake. It was usually just me awake at this hour. Knowing this, I locked the car and then quickly went over to a drug store that was across the street.
Fortunately, it was open and I made my way inside. I went straight to the refreshment section and I grabbed two energy drinks, along with a couple of flavored waters. Grabbing all that I needed, I then went to the cashier to check out.
"This it for you?" A women, the cashier, said to me.
"Yep." I said as I rocked back onto my heels and pulled out a twenty dollar bill from my pocket.
"$14.67." She said to me to make sure that I was aware of the amount I was paying. Nodding my head, I handed her my money and I couldn't help but notice a picture frame that she had of three children near her cash register.
"Are those your kids?" I asked her out of curiosity. She looked at the picture that I was referring to, and then she smiled and said,
"Yes sir. They are my pride and joy."
"They're beautiful." I smiled at her and she kept a big smile on her face.
"One day when you have children, and raise a family, I'm sure they'll be beautiful as well." She said to me.
"Well actually, I already have two boys." I told her and she furrowed her eyebrows and asked,
"You look a little young to be a father?"
"Oh no no no, you see, they're not actually my sons. They're my little brothers but, I have to raise them on my own now so, I call them my boys. I play the role of mom, dad, and big brother." I said.
"Those are all hard shoes to fill. I'm sure your parents would be proud of you young man." She smiled.
I thanked her, grabbed the things I had purchased, and then left the drug store to head back over to my car. The boys were still sleeping so, I quietly unlocked the car and placed all the drinks in the cooler we had.
Once I was settled in, I started the car and then began to drive off.
It was just like I had expected. It was the same routine that I did yesterday morning, and it was most likely the same thing I would do tomorrow morning.
The only thing that was different about today, was the fact that the sky was very cloudy and dark. It looked like a thunderstorm was on its way and I did not like the idea of that. I wasn't scared of thunderstorms but, I just didn't like to drive through them. It was too dangerous and now that I had my family in the car, it was all the more risky.
