In the wizarding world, it's widely known that everyone has a soulmate. The same is said for the Muggles, but they chalk it up to a fantasy. The arse who made this a thing was a wizard by the name of Hermus Uttingham. Though he may be dead, his bloody curse lives on. What's so cursed about a soulmate?
Just because they're your soulmate, doesn't necessarily mean you're theirs.
Though the possibility of the soulmate thing not being reciprocated is rare, one out of a hundred witches or wizards to be exact, it's always at the back of one's mind.
You tap your finger as quietly as possible at the table of the library. James shifts in his seat next to you and you sigh.
"I don't want to write this bloody essay any longer," you whisper. James pats your shoulder and chuckles.
"You shouldn't have waited until the last minute," he chastise.
"I was busy doing yours!" you exclaim.
"Shhh," Madam Pince hisses.
"Sorry," you apologize. She stalks off and James and you snicker.
"She's insufferable," James groans. You grunt in agreement and focus on finishing up your Ancient Runes essay. James peers over and his breath tickles your neck. You flinch in reaction, causing some spare ink to drip onto the parchment. You whip your head to face him, scowling.
"James Potter!" you cry, pointing to the spots of ink. His eyes widen and he looks at you in fear.
"Out," Madam Pince orders. You glare at your parchment and roll it up, stuffing it into your bag along with your textbooks. You sling the bag over your shoulder and stomp out of the library, James scrambling after you. Once you're in the safety of the common room, James grabs your arm.
"I'm sorry." You sigh, plopping on the couch.
"It's fine, James." He sits next to you, starting the fire in silence.
"Are you thinking about it?" You decide to play dumb.
"About what?" You can almost hear him roll his eyes.
"We find out who our soulmates are tonight at midnight. Surely you didn't forget." You grin, nervousness eating away at your chest.
"No, you blithering idiot. I didn't forget." He smacks your shoulder lightly and you both grin. Not too long after, the other nuisances come barreling through the portrait. You groan and let your head fall into your hands.
"Hello, lovers," Sirius chirps. You glare at him.
"Sirius, if you don't shut your—"
"Watch it, (Y/N/N)!" Sirius gasps, covering Remus' ears with his hands. "There are children around." Remus scowls and swats his hands away, Sirius grinning.
