"You're three months pregnant," the doctor stated matter-of-factly. I couldn't help but raise a confused brow in response. The news seemed to contradict the pregnancy test we had taken just a week earlier, which had shown a negative result.
"That makes no sense?" I whispered, my voice laced with disbelief. "We took a pregnancy test a week before, and it was negative."
The doctor offered an understanding smile. "It's not uncommon for home pregnancy tests to yield false negatives, especially early on. The hormone levels may not have been high enough to detect in the initial test."
I exchanged a glance with Vincent, and in our eyes, there was a potent mix of shock and elation. The reality was starting to sink in. The night in the bar, the moments we had shared in the car—during all that time, I had been pregnant.
The thought hit me like a revelation. If Roman were still alive, I would have been pregnant while married to him. It was a whirlwind of emotions, from the unexpected joy of the present to the complex web of the past.
"Three months... so can we see it—them?" Vincent inquired, his excitement palpable.
The doctor chuckled at his words and nodded. She grabbed the ultrasound scanner and gently raised my shirt. I shivered slightly as the cold jelly was applied to my skin.
"Be careful!" Vincent growled, his protectiveness flaring up.
I reassured him, taking his hand in mine. "Vincent, it was just cold. We're in good hands," I said, offering a small, reassuring smile to both my husband and the doctor.
With a deep breath, I shifted my focus back to the monitor, eagerly anticipating the first glimpse of the life that was growing within me.
As the image of our baby flickered on the screen, I couldn't help but feel a deep sense of wonder and joy. Our little one was real, and we were going to be parents.
The doctor looked at us and asked, "would you like to know the gender of your baby?"
Vincent and I exchanged another glance, our hearts racing with anticipation.
"Yes." we whisper at the same time.
The doctor smiled at our shared enthusiasm and began her examination. As the ultrasound images came into view, she announced, "It's a boy."
I glanced over at Vincent, my heart swelling with a mix of emotions. His eyes were fixed on the screen, his hand tightly wrapped around mine. In that moment, he seemed to be lost in his own world, processing the significance of the revelation. A boy. The weight of the moment wasn't lost on me. He had lost his brother, and now we were having a son.
"A boy, Vincent," I whispered, my voice filled with awe and tenderness. He slowly shifted his gaze toward me, his eyes softened with a mixture of emotions. "A son..." I continued, the words hanging in the air between us, heavy with meaning.
He smiles.
A smile.
The doctor leaves the room to print the picture, and I wipe of the jelly from my stomach before pulling down my stomach. "And here I thought I gained weight." I chuckle.
"I thought it was the red wine."
I slam my hand onto his stomach, and he grins as I sit up and quickly slide my jacket on. Suddenly, the door bursts open, and Lilac storms inside, screaming, "My cousin is pregnant! I'm going to be an Auntie!!!"
