Third Person POV
Colby watched as the white car drove further away from him. Instant flashes of his past with the girl were flying through his mind. He walked to Sam's car in a daze, still confused about what had just happened.
"Where's my coffee?" Sam joked as Colby sat down. Colby just stared straight ahead, still trying to process what had just happened.
"Colby, are you okay?" Sam asked after taking in Colby's expression. Colby slowly nodded.
"I just saw Alicia." He mumbled.
She was just as beautiful as the last time he had seen her. However, that wasn't hard because Colby had always thought she was the most beautiful girl in the world. She looked nearly the same besides the way her face matured and her curves had finally come in.
"Who is Alicia?" Sam asked confused. Colby pursed his lips before pulling out his phone. He almost instantly pulled up Instagram and searched up her name, her profile showed up instantly. Without a second thought, he clicked on her profile.
His heart broke when he saw her smile in all of her photos. He missed seeing that smile every day. He honestly doesn't know what happened for them to lose contact. He remembered being forced to unfollow her when he started to grow but he remembered having her number. He also remembered growing busy and he stopped receiving the daily texts from her.
"She was my old best friend before I met you. Remember?" Colby said turning his phone towards Sam. Sam nodded in recognition.
"I thought she lived back in Kansas?" Sam asked pulling out of the Starbucks parking lot.
"I thought so too but it's been eight years so she could've moved," Colby mumbled scrolling through her account.
She had a lot of photos with a beautiful tan-skinned model who he found out was named Morgan Sanchez, a model who was very well known around California. She also had a few photos of her in different locations around California dating back three years so Colby figured she had been here for a while.
"Well, why don't you follow her and try to reconnect?" Sam suggested pulling into their driveway. Colby thought over the idea but ultimately didn't quite know what to say or do. When the two got inside and went their separate ways, Colby went to see if he still had her number. He had gotten a new phone in the past eight years but he always made sure everything transferred over.
Sitting at the very bottom of his messages was her name with a message that was still unopened. Colby's heart dropped as he realized he was the reason that the two had lost contact in the end.
His heart ached as he realized that it wasn't just one text that he missed but multiple, for multiple months. It ranged everywhere from her talking about her day and then asking about his to her wishing him a happy birthday. But the final paragraph is what broke his heart the most.
Lissy<3: Hey Colby. You had unfollowed me off of all social media weeks ago yet I continue to text you daily, quite pathetic of me honestly lol. I've come to realize just how pointless it is to send messages every day knowing that I won't be getting anything in return. Who knows, maybe I will send this and then you'll respond, doubtful... So this is my last message. My sort of goodbye to you. I will never wish ill intentions on you even if we are no longer speaking. I will forever hope the best for you and for Sam, just as I will always be proud of you too. I hope one day this message reaches you but for now, I guess this is goodbye. So... Goodbye Colby.
Colby wanted to turn back the clock and text the girl the moment she sent the first of her million messages, and maybe if he had then they would still be in contact to this day... but he couldn't.
"Colby whats up?" Sam asked sitting down next to him on the couch. Colby had just simply passed the phone over to his best friend and put his head in his hands.
"I'm such a shit friend," Colby mumbled. Sam sighed and passed his phone back to Colby.
"You aren't a shit friend Colby," Sam argued back but Colby wasn't having it.
"I haven't talked to her in eight years Sam. Eight years. And the worst part of it all is I don't even know why I stopped talking to her." Colby said letting out a bitter laugh.
"Well you saw her so you know she is here Colby. Why not try and talk to her?" Sam suggested.
"How do you even talk to someone that you haven't talked to in over eight years? Keep in mind I am the reason we haven't talked." Colby said while turning to face the blonde. Sam thought over his answer. He also didn't really know what to say.
"You could just simply say hey." Sam said with a shrug. Colby looked over at him with a bored expression which made Sam laugh.
"Honestly dude what is the worst thing that could happen if you simply said hey?" Colby didn't know how to reply. He didn't even know if Alicia had the same number so for all he knew texting her wouldn't even work.
"I don't know Sam." Colby said while messing with the ring on his finger. Sam simply gave his friend an encouraging smile before standing up.
"Just give it a day or two then. See if your confidence builds up to send a text or for all we know you could run into her again. So just give it a little." Sam said patting Colby's shoulder before he left the room.
Colby knew that he couldn't wait that long. Normally he was a patient guy but something was pushing him to send that text, even if he was terrified to do it.
He stared at his phone for a while, rereading Alicia's goodbye message to him while trying to build up his confidence to text her. It has been eight years and based on her reaction today he wasn't even sure if she would respond to him.
"Fuck it." He mumbled before typing out a simple, 'Hey'.
Before he could talk himself out of it he pressed the blue arrow. Anxiety bubbled in his chest as he watched the text send but the delivered sign wasn't showing up, but when it did his anxiety went down only slightly.
That all changed when he watched the word delivered turn into the word read.
