'off to ohio
see you later, bitches"

that was it. the very last words they'd heard from her. well, not words exactly, considering they'd come from a text. a stupid, stupid text that had been read over a million times since it'd been sent. she was never one for goodbyes. but really? a text?

it had been a year now. a long, painful year. the pouges had been all over the place. ever since she left, things had just been ... different. it wasn't all based on her fleeing, of course: john b's dad went missing, kie begun at the kook academy, pope had to start helping his dad out a lot more. at least jj remained the same, but even he felt the cold drift of the darkened shadows when he reminisced in a time when they were all together.

kiara often wondered how much the others thought about her. about her silly little jokes, about her outstanding ability to say anything and not feel any shame, about her filterless conversations and about her inability to hide her facial expressions. she wondered if they ever pictured her face, too. if they ever lost sleep at night, imagining  themselves touching her face one last time. watching her smile one. last. time.

why didn't she say goodbye?

was everything she thought about the two of them simply made up in her head?

surely, she felt it too. the connection that lingered between them. the firey senses that sparked whenever they laughed together. the longing for more whenever they touched.

surely, it wasn't all in her head.

but then why didn't she say goodbye?

"THAT'S MIKA, OR 'MEEKS', AS I PERSONALLY LIKE TO CALL HER. She's not here right now, but she's coming back. I think. I hope. It's not really the same without her.

She was my step-sister, I guess, even though our parents didn't get officially married. My dad, her mom. A match made in heaven; one just as sane as the other. Or insane would probably be a better word.

They'd met on a course, when I was a kid, and my dad went out for four months on a trip for some studies about some expedition he was looking into at the time. I don't know the specifics. I don't really care for them, either.

But, anyway, when my dad came home, he brought her mom over too. A few months later and, boom, my house is infiltrated by females.

I loved having Meeks there. I always wanted siblings, and she was my sister. Not the kind of sister I'd imagined as a kid, but she was good enough.

She and her mom lived with us for four years.

And then dad went missing and they fled.

Without a word.

Like nothing ever happened.

Like none of it ever meant anything.

I mean seriously, we went through puberty together.

And then she just packed up and left.

It kinda sucks." John B Routledge
