El

I took her hand, grasping it in fear.

I didn't know where I was, and there were people everywhere.

The only thing that was familiar was Max, but not the way her hand in mine made me feel.

Butterflies fluttered their wings like a heartbeat inside of my stomach as we held hands, walking through the loud building, bright lights shining down on us.

Max's father led the way through to spinning black spirals with bags and suitcases traveling in and out of the tunnels.

I stared at it and Max laughed slightly.

"It's to check your luggage!" she said, leading me toward the spirals and placing her bag onto it.

I gripped the straps of my own in fear and Max looked at me worried.

"What's wrong?" she asked.

"My...my bag." I spoke.

Max smiled.

"It's okay, you'll get it back."

Hesitating, I slid the backpack off of my back and set my bag down onto the machine.

Stepping back I watched as our bags travelled through the first tunnel and then, moments later, appeared out the second.

Laughing slightly, I walked back up to the tunnel to take it.

"Girls come on. We're going to miss our flight." Max's father spoke over the noise and I turned to look at Max.

"Flight?" I asked and she looked worried for a moment.

"Yeah." She muttered. "It's okay."

I didn't know what to say. I didn't know what any of this meant.

"Okay." I spoke quietly, wanting so desperately to take her hand again.

Max smiled shyly and we walked alongside each other, fingertips brushing nervously.

Max's father walked up the steps to the plane and I glanced over at Max in panic as the plane's motor spun over our heads.

She glanced back and nodded.

Together we walked the steps and into the plane taking our seats three rows behind Max's father as per his instructions.

The seats were small and our knees touched, sending electricity through my body once again.

The feeling was becoming stronger, with every glance she gave me causing my heart to flutter at rapid speed.

I had only felt like this around one other person.

Mike.

But it was different with Mike, it had to have been. I was in love with Mike.

I couldn't be in love with Max...right? No way. She was a girl and so was I and...that just wasn't how it was supposed to be.

Even I knew that.

But the feelings I had were still very real and I couldn't push away the urge to touch her soft, pale skin that shone from underneath the plane's dim lights.

A lady in a red dress began to speak, but I didn't hear any of what she was saying.

My gaze hung on Max's crystal blue eyes that were directed at the lady.

She was so...pretty.

But no.

That wasn't how it worked.

I didn't like Max. I couldn't like Max.

Not like that.

Forcing my gaze off of her, I stared at the lady with complete boredom in my eyes.

"Jesus Christ." Max muttered under her breath.

Glad to have something else to think about aside from the lady's speech and the feelings that were slowly finding their way inside of my thoughts, I glanced over.

"What?" I asked and she looked at me, as if not realising I had heard her.

"This woman's got a whole prepared speech. Geez" She whispered, smiling.

I laughed a little.

"Yeah, geez," I echoed, smiling too.

Then suddenly, the woman stopped talking and a loud voice spoke over the speakers, crackling so that I couldn't comprehend what he was saying.

Max looked at me, grinning.

"Ready?" she asked me.

"Ready for wh-"

The plane tilted back and then lifted into the air without warning.

Gasping, I fell sideways into Max's chest.

She laughed, but her face was bright red.

"What...what was that?" I asked, timidly and she laughed again, earning us glares from the people around us who were apparently trying to sleep.

"Takeoff. We're flying now, look!" she exclaimed, pointing out the window.

Sitting up hastily, realising that I was still leaning heavily on her chest.

My heartbeat quickened as my hand brushed the skin of her shoulder, exposed by the striped singlet she wore. (A/N: Think Sadie Sink as Ziggy Berman in Fear Street: 1978)

Staring out the window in astonishment, I realised that my awe wasn't in the stars that shone so brightly as we flew over Indiana.

It was in the girl who was sat right next to me.
