Max

Oh sh!t.

What have I gotten myself into?

Mike and the others were staring at us, expectant for an answer to what had just been said.

El and I had decided to tell them but I was suddenly having major second thoughts.

El squeezed my hand tightly and Robin and Nancy stood awkwardly behind us in the living room of Hopper's cabin.

Almost another week had passed since Wednesday morning and Hopper had been called in for an emergency shift on Saturday morning.

So lucky for us (though now that was appearing highly questionable) the house was empty.

"El and I are...dating," I spoke quietly. My whole body shook with anxiety, afraid of what the boys would say.

"Dating?!" they exclaimed as one after a moment of complete silence.

"Yeah..." I spoke, my voice trailing away into nothing when I realised I didn't know what else to say.

Lucas and Dustin's eyebrows were raised as high as humanly possible while Mike simply stared at us. Will smiled slightly to himself.

I didn't bother to wonder why.

"You and El," Mike clarified. "Like, my girlfriend El."

I rolled my eyes.

"Ex-girlfriend," El reminded him, her voice edged with cold.

"Yeah, okay, fine, ex-girlfriend, whatever. You guys are dating?!"

Nancy cleared her throat and Mike looked up at her.

"Did you know about this?" he spat at her.

Nancy glared back at him.

"What does it matter? Max and El are dating, do you have a problem with that?" she asked.

Mike stared at her and then back at us.

"Yes?! No?! I don't know! You're gay?" he exclaimed, looking at El.

El nodded timidly.

"I-I think so," she whispered.

"Back off 20 questions!" I exclaimed and he glared at me.

"It's all your fault! You made my girlfriend break up with me just so you could hook up with her the moment she's available!"

I gave him a one-over, my gaze coated with a glare.

"I did not make her do anything! Did it ever cross your dense little mind that maybe she was pissed at you? You lied to her and treated her like some item that you can parade around town! El isn't your trophy wife, Mike!"

El stared at me, in what appeared to be awe.

"Mike, just leave her alone. She dumped you for a reason," Will spoke from the back of the room.

Mike whipped around to face him.

"Who's side are you on?" Mike cried and Will rolled his eyes.

"Who said anything about sides? El dumped you and she's dating Max! That's the end of the story!" Nancy told him.

"Thank you!" Both Will and I said.

Mike sighed.

"I just don't understand! I loved you!"

I rolled my eyes. He cant have loved her that much, I thought. Or he wouldn't have treated her like sh!t.

"Mike," Nancy warned, anger in her tone.

El backed up a step.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

My heart squeezed, seeing her this way. I wanted to hurt Mike for hurting her, but I had to stop myself. I had to.

"Mike!" Nancy cried finally. "Leave El alone!"

Mike finally relented, turning away.

El fell into my shoulder in fear and I held her body tightly next to mine.

Nobody spoke for a moment.

"Why did you tell them before you told us?" Mike asked finally with a glance to Robin and his sister.

They exchanged a nervous glance and I held El tighter.

Nancy sighed.

"It's really none of your business Mike."

Mike stared back at her.

"None of my business? You were conspiring against me! I think that's all too much of my business Nancy!"

But when I looked up again I noticed tears in Nancy's eyes, her hand curled tightly around Robin's.

"Just leave us alone," she muttered.

Nobody spoke; the room a nervous quiet.

El's hand was in mine; Nancy's in Robin's.

Maybe, just maybe, we weren't as alone as we thought we were.
