9 | Started From The Bottom

Manhattan, New York

──────

Quinn was seventeen when she had her first anxious mothering moment involving Lilith – a moment that continued to haunt her mind anytime she found herself in an unplanned face-off with the red-faced Ghoul-born teenager.

It was the first time Grace allowed the triplets to be separated and out of her sight. The young mother was struggling with her postpartum, and Quinn was too much of a teenage dirtbag to understand how important it was back then to be there for her. Quinn was ecstatic when Grace agreed to let her watch Lilith for the day, planning all the things in her head she wanted to do with the young child between classes. It wasn't until Cheerios practice that she really worried if Lilith was enjoying their time together as much as she was.

"You can be a cheerleader just like your Momma when you're older." Quinn had cooed while Lilith completely ignored her presence.

The child continued to play with her toys, pushing them into little circles. Despite all looking different, every toy had a place until it met back at the beginning in its carefully lined circle.

"Lilly?" Quinn sank to her knees and smiled at the child, ruffling her pom poms. "Look here, baby. Look at Momma! What do I have? Look what I have, Lilly!"

Lilith looked up at the pom poms and stared at her mother with a loose abandonment. She watched every ruffling twirl and each sparkling color gleam into her eyes, but she was close to ignoring Quinn entirely. It left the blonde sighing softly when the child returned to the different toys in front of her until Santana walked by holding Luca, leaving Quinn to wonder why Lilith was so attached to Santana over her.

It was a simple memory. A small remembrance for the little girl who never looked at her like she was her proud Momma, and that alone shattered Quinn's heart. It hurt to think their children quite possibly always lacked a connection with her, but that wasn't their fault. Quinn knew she had to do better and often found herself struggling with that fact when faced with walls of frustration.

One of them being Lilith.

"Lilly, go to your room!" Quinn attempted to get her eldest daughter out of the way. "I need to talk to Lucy right now. I will talk to you in a few minutes."

"No!" Lilith growled, standing in front of her sister with tight fists at her sides. "No! No!"

"Lilly, it's okay." Lucy pleaded, grabbing Lilith's shaking hand and leaning around her sister to try and reassure the teenager. "Lil, I'm okay. Momma and I are just talking."

"Lilly–" Quinn gasped in disbelief when Lilith threw her hands forward to her attempt to step forward, knocking her in the chest to encourage her to step back.

"Don't touch her!" Lilith stepped into Quinn's space and growled up at her, fangs bared as Lucy tried to pull her back. "Don't touch my sister. Don't touch my mother!"

"Lilith, we do not hit people!" Santana quickly threw an arm between the two, sending her daughter a look when her eyes darted panicky between Lucy and Quinn. "We talked about this. You're sixteen, Mija. We can't hit when we're angry. Can we please sit down and talk?"

"Go away!" Lilith screamed, tears threatening to fall down her face. She grabbed Lucy's wrist behind her when she noticed Fourteen appear to her left, growling in warning. "Don't touch her. I don't want you hurting her."
