37 | Self Control

On a train going nowhere, but everywhere

──────

Ophelia leaned back against the inner train car wall and reluctantly opened her eyes.

She couldn't sleep any longer against the rattling and uncontrolled bouncing against the floor. It had been a few days on this train, so she was grateful for some much needed rest. However, Ophelia still felt a tad unsettled about truly being able to sleep without worrying about someone finding them.

"Hey, bud," Ophelia whispered. She ran her fingers over Wallace's ears as he raised his head to observe her. She looked down and peered at the way Lilith slept against her bookbag with a soft sigh. "Wallie-boy, I think this is a huge mistake."

Wallace snuggled up to Lilith's side. His owner continued to sleep, leash tightly clutched in her hand.

Ophelia tilted her head when she noticed Lilith's mask falling slightly. She remembered how the girl looked when they were younger, but it had been many long years since she's seen her with no covering on her face.

She reached out and allowed her curiosity to get the best of her. Her fingers lightly swiped the strands of dirty blonde hair out of Lilith's face before descending to her mask. Ophelia pulled back quickly, watching Lilith's nose twitch, before committing and sinking her hand lower to remove the mask. Her fingers brushed under Lilith's eyes and carefully pulled the black mask off her friend's sister's face.

Lilith looked no different from Luca. They had the same pretty green eyes and olive skin. Her brows were a bit messier than Luca's, given her friend frequently fixed them up, but they weren't bad. It was pretty obvious that her Aunt Grace had or Aunt Brittany had helped Lilith with hers recently, but they still had that naturally fanning.

"Damn, girl." Ophelia muttered.

Her eyes were covered with scratch marks. Some looked more recent than others, while most were scars from their childhood days, when Lilith was severely out of control. Ophelia had a memory deep in her mind where Lilith was so violent toward Lucy while Aunt Camren babysat that they had to call Aunt Quinn back from classes to help defuse the situation.

A specific scar from over her right eyes down to just below where the mask covers were thick and had very obvious skin displacement through the entire marking. A few slashes indicated there had been some type of stitch placed in her face, but was fortunately taken out to let her eyes heal not long ago. It was fresh enough to be pink and healed enough to be unraised.

Ophelia's thumb dipped down and brushed over the bottom end of the closed wound. She bit her lip and searched Lilith's face until she noticed a little number carved into her cheek bone directly beside her left eye.

Five.

"Ouch." Ophelia winced at the feeling of the number under her finger. She trailed down Lilith's cheek and stared at her likeness to Luca.

The train rocked a bit more violently than hoped. The wheels squealed under their car and rumbled a few bags beside them to the floor.

Within all the commotion, Lilith's eyes fluttered open. She took a moment for her vision to clear as Ophelia quickly returned her mask to its position.

"Don't–" Lilith threw out a hand and punched Ophelia in the side. "Touch!"

"Ow!" Ophelia swung down and hit Lilith upside the head. She scooted away and shoved Lilith further with her feet. "Stop being a little bitch. I was fixing your mask."
