Friday. The day I've been looking forward to all week.
Maybe just maybeee, he would teach me how to float serve. Well, start. Obviously, I wouldn't be able to learn it in one hour. I had practiced holding my balance when setting from a low point just like he told me to and I was so going to use it in practice today.
Ironically, Coach's focus today was serving and receiving.
We did our normal warm-up and then proceeded with her plans for the day. I was so concentrated on impressing coach that I did not once glance at the stands not noticing Atsumu in the progress.
Not seeing him didn't last long since I had Yoko pulling on my shirt suddenly.
"What is it?" I looked at her puzzled. "Look, H E is here!" She didn't point to the stands so I was even more confused now. "Who? And more importantly where? What do you mean Yoko?" "Atsumu is watching us from the stands again." Oh. I could have guessed it but I didn't expect him to also come to our practice and why was Yoko telling me about it? "Oh okay." I just said acting as if I didn't care or know what he was doing again. "Ugh come on Y/N, you're no fun!" She sighed. "It's so cool that he is here!! I need to talk to him later!" Huh, well, it could be a problem since he will be busy later... "You know, maybe he's just checking whether or not we are any good." I told her. She, of course, didn't listen to me and was convinced that must have a crush on one of us. Pretty stupid to be honest.Coach had told us what she wanted us to do. It was simple. On one side there were six players in a normal receive line-up. On the other side, the rest of the team gathered to make their serves. If we had served the ball we were supposed to replace the person playing setter for the round.
The task was just for practicing routine processes.
To my luck she let me serve as well. I put my jump serves on display. They weren't anything special but I had perfect aim and control over the ball. Because I didn't play last year at all I focused all my time on my serve control.
This resulted in me having a perfect throw and the exact placement I wanted meaning I could intentionally hit the net, hit the line, or anywhere else. I could also do a standing float but even combined it wasn't as impressive as the jump serves from Mika. Her hits were extremely hard. Unfortunately, if she hits the ball with 100%, she won't have as much control.„Are you staying late today as well, Y/N?" Yoko asked me. „Of course. I need to catch up!" She viewed me with a concerned look. „Well, if you say so. I will see if I can get a word or two with Atsumu!" I just nodded. While they all left, I put the second net away. „That was better than last time." A voice I'd recognize anywhere. „Hello, Atsumu." I smiled. „Thanks, I practiced!" „Good to hear." „So? What do we do now?" „Teach you the basics of jump float serve?" He'd really do that?
In the beginning, he was basically flexing his perfect execution of float serves. I was supposed to watch. After a few times, we broke the process into pieces and he explained every single one in detail. First the steps before the jump, then the actual jump, and in the end the hit. We discussed the timing and the throw as well. After explaining it he let me try and correct my posture and other mistakes I made.
I was supposed to show him my standing float serves as well. „They're good but you should try focusing on hitting the ball right in the middle. Remember, no rotation!" I tried again and succeeded. „Yes! Good!"
I tried again. This time I missed the ball by a bit and hit it into the net. He came over to correct my posture poking his finger into my side and telling me to stand up straighter. He is veryyyy close... I got a bit nervous, to be honest.
„Now try again." It worked. In the end, he told me to try and do it while jumping. Once I got it, we stopped. „Always finish with something positive!" „Yes, sir!"
After cleaning the gym we found ourselves talking again.
„You're improving fast. I think you might as well get it before the Preliminaries." He began. „All thanks to you." „Did you get me some of that expensive stuff?" „Nah. My dealer didn't show up." I sighed. „Ts ts ts." I looked at him. „Did you talk to Yoko after training?" „Again who is Yoko? And no I did not talk to any of your team members if she's one." „You know the outside hitter. The one with red hair?" „Nah, don't know who you're talking about." I laughed to myself a little. „Doesn't a good setter have to be perceptive and know what's going on around him?" I teased him. „I only remember the important details, Y/N." That must hurt, poor Yoko... I laughed at his comment. „Now I get why some people describe you as arrogant." „That's straight-up mean." He played offended. I cracked up even more. „No but seriously. I get that I sometimes come across as absolutely arrogant. It's just I don't know..." „Don't worry about it. Last time I watched your practice I actually tried to figure out why some people call you that." „Really?" He seemed surprised. „Yeah, I just didn't understand why, so I wanted to find out but I just couldn't come upon why. You just seem too sweet to be arrogant." Thinking out loud is a bad idea Y/N... a really bad one... maybe he's just gonna let it go... „Sweet?" He asked. Hehe... „Uhm well, I don't know, I mean- You're just too nice I guess." I tried to explain frantically. He snickered. „I'm joking."
