(In this au hinata and kageyama were in the same middle school, but since hinata joined later, after everyone had chosen clubs and settled, he wasn't allowed on the volleyball team. His height had also added to the coach not accepting him. Kageyama and Hinata were best friends before his king phase and the rift happened before the king phase too)

No one expected what hinata shouyo would see when he entered his new highschool, karasuno. It was a new and fresh start—from what he knew no one he knows from his middle school was going there. His first day at karasuno was pleasant, with no one knowing who he was, or what happened in his past, he made friends easily with his bubbly and energetic personality. He attracted both males and females, everyone looking at him at least twice when they first saw him and immediately opening up to him due to his alluring character and his very-extremely-hard-to-ignore orange hair.

As I was walking through the hall, I couldn't help but hear loud chatter in another classroom filled with first years like me. 'How did people socialise and make friends so fast? Damn, it was only the first day.' Curious, I peered through one of the windows. It wasn't like how I'd expected it—small groups forming and chatting—it seemed as though everyone but a few people were gathered around one person. One person who was particularly shorter and smaller than everyone surrounding him. One person who had an abnormal amount of energy. One person who had very bright coloured hair, a very familiar orange colour that only one person I knew could have. One person with big, brown eyes that turned eerily like a crows when serious. I knew this person all too well.

Kageyama was frozen, watching the boy he used to know. He had heard from some mutual middle school friends that shouyo was thinking of coming to karasuno, but he didn't know if they were telling the truth or not. He bit his tongue as he used the boys first name and corrected himself. He stood there, eyeing the person in the centre of the crowd, feelings of happiness, frustration and longing filling him and mixing into one big ball of emotions.

If not for the loud ringing of the bell and the students pushing through the crowd that had formed to get to class, kageyama would not have moved, and would have kept watching the small boy happily interact with his new peers. He looked down at the booklet he was given upon entering the school, a jumble of information. He skimmed the small paragraphs.....items......locations.....a map...there! 'Kageyama Tobio, classroom 910, floor 1, seating plan below. Please find your classroom and your seat. You will have an assigned seat mate that will stick with you your entire journey at karasuno. Only under special or necessary circumstances is your seat mate to be changed.' He briefly looked up, trying to see where he was to figure out where to go, to see that the sign on top of the classroom he was just staring into, read 910. Hinata was going to be in his class. And what was this seat mate thing? He just hoped it wasn't Hinata, but a tiny place in his heart disagreed. It longed for it to be hinata. That part of him clawed and gnawed at his heart from the inside out like a hamster. But it was a small, tameable hamster. So it didn't matter. Right? He sighed. A sigh of relief? A sigh of happiness? A sigh of frustration? A sigh of acceptance? He didn't know.

<hinata's pov>
Everything was going great. Everything was going according to plan. Everyone loved me. I made friends. And I was already accepted onto the volleyball team after only being allowed to watch the practice during middle school. I could start a fresh life. It was going to be perfect. I smiled. As I opened my eyes to take another good look at my new surroundings, I saw something, no, someone.

Then it all went crashing down. The familiar raven black hair, the piercing ocean blue eyes. I knew these features all too well. It was all carved into my brain. I looked back at the floor to avoid eye contact. 'Why was he here? Was he here to ruin my life? I mean, as long as I pretend not to know him and ignore him he won't be able to bother me right? As long as I keep distance-'

'Plop'
I turned my head around. My seat mate. The one we were assigned for basically our whole life here. My hopes and dreams were crushed once more as I stared into the blue eyes of my seat mate, some of his black locks hanging in front of his face. I couldn't help but stare. My life was over. Why was fate doing this to me?
