YOUNG BLOOD
xx. supernatural witness protection program
SIZZLES AND POPS erupted throughout the farmhouse kitchen, filling the air with a savory aroma from the skillet covered stovetop. Oil turned grease as the foods within each pan cooked to perfection. Erin stood before them, flipping pancakes and shifting hashbrowns at a steady pace to prevent burning them. Her thanks to Hayley and Elijah for a trip into the nearest town to stock up on things she would need days earlier didn't go unnoticed. What better way to show it than with breakfast?
Light humming escaped her lips as the food neared its final moments on the stove. A mound of sausage and bacon had already been made and set aside, along with fried eggs and even some scrambled for Hope. Erin didn't expect anyone to go out of their way to eat a majority of the food, but she knew that it helped curb blood cravings in vampires. So even if they didn't need the nutrients like she did, it would still hold some benefits.
And aside from that, who could resist the taste of bacon?
Erin continued to push the cooking hashbrowns around the skillet to brown them up when another presence entered the kitchen. She turned to see Hayley enter the room with Hope settled on her hip. The hybrid had scarcely left the child's side since arriving, and Erin didn't blame her for it. They had been separated long enough. Hayley should get to spend as much time as she wanted with her daughter, before the outside world dragged them back apart.
"Smells great," Hayley voiced, moving further into the kitchen to stand beside her at the stove. "I didn't know you could cook."
Erin grabbed a spatula to transfer the finished pancakes onto a nearby plate and said, "my dad taught me. My mom couldn't cook to save her life, so it was basically the two of us in the kitchen since I was like ten."
Hayley nodded. "Guess it comes in handy now, living with a bunch of vampires," she replied, gaining a hum from Erin as she returned her attention to the golden hashbrowns. "Although, I'm surprised you have the energy to make all of this, especially after what I heard last night."
Erin froze, the spatula in her hand remained held in place when Hayley's words reached her ears. Her cheeks warmed and her heart began to pound inside her chest, but she tried to ignore it and continued to stir the shredded slices of potato. "What do you mean?" she questioned lowly, even though she already knew exactly what the hybrid meant.
Hayley snorted, reaching out to snatch up a slice of crispy bacon. "That might've worked—if I didn't have supernatural hearing," she quipped with a smirk on her lips. "I'm glad you and Elijah finally admitted your feelings for each other. Just wasn't expecting you two to be so loud about it."
