This takes place right after the feast in the LeafWing village.
Blue's POV
"Are you sure you don't want to stay with us tonight?" Blue asked Sundew hopefully.
The green and gold LeafWing shook her head, turning away silently. Sighing, Blue walked over to the nest Sundew had shown them. Swordtail was waiting for him, his royal blue wings tucked to his sides to make room for his friend. Blue laid down next to him with his head on his talons, wrapping his wings around himself for comfort.
Sounds of LeafWings preparing to go to sleep for the night could be heard outside. He closed his eyes and let his mind drift, imagining what it would be like to be Sundew, with this dangerous place as her home. Did she feel secretly scared all the time? Or was she really as fearless as she seemed? Did her leafspeak make her feel powerful, or scared of what she could do, the way Blue sometimes felt about his flamesilk? Did she like being special, or did it make her feel pressured?
I'm starting to sound like Cricket. He realized wryly. His amusement evaporated as he felt a small pang in his chest.
Even though Cricket's only a few feet away in another nest, it feels like she's in the distant kingdoms.
He wished he could feel her warm wings wrap around him or hear her sweet voice asking endless questions. Especially now that the LeafWings wanted to use his flamesilk to burn down the hives. It made him feel sick thinking about how many dragons that would hurt. He winced, remembering his flamesilk had already hurt other dragons, when Belladona and the rest of the LeafWings went to burn down Bloodworm hive. All the innocent dragonets, eggs, flightless SilkWings...
It wasn't your fault. Crickets voice said in his head, just as she had said after Sundew had told him how her pod had burned down the hive. The LeafWings did it, not you. Cricket's voice reminded him. But then his Blue-voice added, they probably had a reason why they did it.
By now Swordtail was snoring gently, his chest rising and falling rhythmically. Blue thought of waking him to see how his best friend felt, but then decided Swordtail was probably already worried enough about Luna. Pulling his wings closer to himself, he felt himself slipping into the trance of imagining what it was like to be Belladona and Hemlock.
Cricket's POV
Cricket wailed in despair as everyone she knew was thrown into prison. Fierce Sundew, fighting with all her might. Helpless Katydid, walking into a cell with blank white eyes. Brave Swordtail, fighting as he tried to keep himself from being thrown into a cell. And worst of all, beautiful, sweet, Blue, hanging his head as he was thrown into a cell far away from Cricket. His morpho butterfly-blue wings covered in scratches that bleed endlessly as he collapsed to the ground.
"Blue!" She cried desperately, fighting to get to him. Two white eyed HiveWings pinned her against a wall. To her horror, the HiveWings slowly morphed together into one. Two deep, glittering black eyes stared at her hungrily. Queen Wasp held up her stinger, smiling a horrible evil grin. Cricket struggled, but she could hardly move. She watched, utterly terrified, as Queen Wasp's stinger plunged deep into her arm. She screamed, and blackness engulfed her.
Cricket's head shot up. She was panting, and her heart was trying to punch its way out of her chest.
It was just a dream. Blue's okay. Queen Wasp doesn't have us. We're in the LeafWing village.
She looked down at the tiny hatchling curled up next to her chest, thankful she hadn't woken Bumblebee. She heard the little HiveWing murmur, "eeee yim Snudoo," before her words melted into gibberish.
