The alarm rouses me from my uncomfortable slumber. I knew just by the looks of this mattress that this would be quite the rough night, and I was right.
I crane my neck side to side, wincing at how sore it is. Same for my upper spine. It feels like my entire back is made of sharp rocks.
I push myself up, looking over at the alarm on my phone blaring loudly.
6:31 am
My finger presses the off button before coming up to rub the sleep from my tired eyes. I slept a good amount last night, but I was tossing and turning the entire time. Today will be rough.
My legs swing off the side of the bed, and I ready myself before standing up tall, stretching every muscle in my body. A soft groan escapes my lips as my body tenses in a satisfyingly painful way.
I grab the pile of clothes and shower essentials I set up on my dresser before reaching for the handle on my door. I steady myself once more before realizing I need to put more clothes on before exiting my room.
At the old base, the ladies were completely separated from the men, so you could walk to the bathroom in just your underwear without the worry of one of the guys seeing you. Here, that's a different story. The bathroom and showers are on a completely different floor, where I need to walk past several of the guys' rooms before arriving at.
I groan again, this time in an annoyed tone. I lean down to the ground before picking up yesterday's pants and pulling them back onto my body. I slip my feet into my shower shoes and grab my pile once again.
I swing the door open and start down the hallway, toward the staircase that leads to the bathrooms.
I hear my door click shut behind me before realizing I can't get back into my own room.
Fuck
I turn around, confirming it is, in fact, completely shut. I feel my eyes roll in the most dramatic way possible. I'm not really a morning person, obviously.
Whatever, just go shower. Deal with it after.
I continue on my journey down the stairs and over to the bathrooms. The men's and women's bathrooms are directly next to one another. Both are shielded by a frosted glass double door as well as a wall to ensure privacy. I grab the cold metal handle on the door and swing it open.
The automatic lights switch on upon me entering the room. I turn right and round the privacy wall and lay my eyes on the cleanest bathroom/shower I have ever seen. The white tiles on the walls and floor are shiny and pristine.
Wow, I'm impressed.
I take a few more steps inside, gawking at how clean each toilet it, how spotless the floor is. For a bunch of sweaty dudes, this place is immaculate.
I guess this confirms my suspicion that I am the only woman on base, however. I wondered yesterday if there were any ladies I could befriend at dinner, but I never met one. So, I guess this bathroom is all mine. Rad.
I walk farther into the bathroom and find the showers in the back of the room, also incredibly clean. Each shower stall is covered by a privacy curtain, which all looks unused. I set my pile of things down on the counter on the very back wall of the room, which has one large mirror above it, spanning the entirety of the back wall. The bright lights above make me look angelic in the bright white, spotless bathroom I stand in.
I waste no time in stripping off the clothes that still cover me, eager to get in the warm shower to soften my tense muscles. I set everything in neat piles on the counter, next to my clean clothes. I wrap myself in my towel and trot over to one of the showers, turning the handle on.
