When it came to the Outer Banks, divided in two by the sand in pockets versus gold, living a rich life was literal. You did not have a rich life if you worked two jobs to put food on the table, you did not have a rich life if you didn't have hot water to wash the sea from your hair and you definitely didn't have a rich life if you were forced to live on the Cut of the island.
BAILEY KEKOA thought her life was rich. Nestled in her family's small fishing cabin on the marsh, she had everything she needed in one place. She did not need piles of gold to make the world go round, all she needed was her mother's flower shop and her father's old truck she had helped fix as a child and her big sister laughing her ear. Her life had always been that: simple and quiet, albeit a bit lonely, but the summer before senior year was supposed to be a time of healing and reflection, and she knew her mother was looking down on her through the sunrays.
All Bailey had wanted was to make friends and spend a summer in the sun and not alone, but it quickly turns into something she never expected. When her neighbour begins to pursue his father's dying project and she is dragged into the chaos against her better judgement, she is forced to look the idea of gold in the eye, the idea that maybe her father wouldn't have to overwork himself and her sister could go to college and then some. Everyone, it seems, wants a piece of the infamous Royal Merchant's treasure, and Bailey Kekoa is no different (she'll wish she was).
