That night Jake and Julia set off to find another place of shelter for them and their newborn baby. It was no longer safe at the stand alone log cabin they held themselves up in since Julia gave birth to their child. Now the scent of human blood was too strong there.

It began to lightly snow, it was in fact winter and trudging through the thick cold with a newborn baby wasn't part of their plans. Actually, none of this was anything that they dreamed would have happened to them. The baby slightly opened her eyes and took in her first sight of what snow looked like.

"We need to find a place soon. I feel like we have been walking for a few hours now and I haven't seen anything. There haven't been any people, animals or any other kind of other life. I wonder what is going on." Jake said.

It was quiet as they moved. The only sounds that could be heard were the whistling from the wind and each other. As they approached towards a hill that began to quickly fill with snow, Jake peered over it to see there was a small town up ahead. There was slight movement that he could see and was hopeful that it was a safe place to hide. He turned to his side and looked at Julia who was carrying their baby in her arms.

"Okay, Julia, we are going to have to go down there to see if we can get any help."

"B-But Jake we do not even know who is down there. We could be putting our child and ourselves at risk here."

Julia tugged on her bottom lip slightly, hesitant about making this move to the town. She wasn't sure what to do as she looked back at her husband.

"I trust you. If you think going to the town is our best option right now then I will go."

"We really do not have a choice Julia if we do not want her to freeze to death. Let's go."

Ultimately, Jake was scared about making this move, but he couldn't allow that to show on his face. It would scare Julia.

Julia took her husband's hand, holding it as firm as possible as they made their way over that hill. Soon they made it to the town, stopping at the entrance to take a peak and sure enough inside there were people. They stood guard around the towns parameters and one spotted the couple walking up their bridge.

"Stop!"

The two did just that, stopping right in their tracks as they looked up at the guard above.

"What is your reason for coming here? Speak!"

Jake let go of Julia's hand and inched towards the wall where the guard was with his hands up. He could see that the guard was rather serious and wanted an explanation.

"Please, my family and I need a safe place to stay. My wife just gave birth and our baby will not survive out here. We seek shelter for a couple of days and then we will move on. Please."

The guard leaned over the railing up top, observing him and his family with questioning looks. Then he picked up a telephone that was outside and called in to speak to someone of a more higher authority. He was told before if there were any people trying to seek shelter then he had to call in to get permission.

"Sir, we have a family here who is in need of shelter. They have a newborn child with them sir."

Julia listened, unaware of just who the guard was talking to but could gather it must of been who was in charge. She was worried that they would be turned away.

"Okay sir, will do. Thank you."

The guard hung up the phone and turned back to face the family.

"I am going to send out a couple of guards to come retrieve you. There will be a couple of things asked of you, just do them please."

A button was pushed right beside him that allowed the front gate to open all the way down with three guards waiting on the other side to go through. They all had guns as they approached quickly.

Guard 1: "Okay, give us your hunting gun and show us your teeth. We need to be absolutely sure that you are safe to bring into this town. There will be no weapons carried in on you and we must confirm you are still human."

"Hand over my gun? Are you crazy that is our only defense that I have for my family!"

Julia slid her hand up her husbands arm and shook her head.

"Do what they are asking honey, give them the gun."

Jake looked the guard in the face and against his better judgement gave him his gun.

"Now, open up we need to see your teeth. Quickly now."

Julia and Jake opened up their mouths, revealing human teeth with no razor sharp edges. Then Julia gently brought her baby close and revealed the inside of her mouth as well. As she was a newborn she didn't have teeth yet, but knew it would be a question.

Guard 2: "Alright, let them in! They are safe!"

The guard above nodded and waved them through with permission after being cleared. The three guards escorted them inside and the gate was then closed shut.

They were safe, but for how long.
