Once Julia and Angelica were asleep snuggled up together in a blanket Jake stepped out to go talk to Grant. Jake thought that Grant on some level did deserve to know about why exactly they were on the run all this time. Of course, it was due to vampiric activity getting too high but also because of a secret that only very few knew about. A secret that their enemy learned through knowledge given to them from a source they thought was their friend. This was a risky chance he was taking and he knew that.
Up on the bridge above the gate is where Grant stood. It was his turn to take watch with a guard or two on each end. He however stood in the middle with his sniper rifle leaned against the railing ready to go. A guard spotted Jake approaching the stairs leading up and waved him through. Jake waved back and continued to make his way up to the bridge with permission granted.
It was a rather cold night his fingers feeling rather numb to the touch. Jake blew warmth into his hands twice as he approached Grant.
"Grant, I have to talk to you about something. It is important that you know about it."
"Oh? What is that Jake?"
Grant turned his head slightly to face him in conversation rather intrigued on the topic.
"Please it must be said in private."
Jake eyed up the guards who weren't too far away from their location. He felt as if he couldn't trust them with this information he was about to give. Grant let out a light sigh and nodded.
"Alright let's get somewhere private then. You all cover the bridge until I get back."
"Thank you Grant."
Grant led the way to a building they now used for supplies. It was a quiet spot where they would be able to talk without being listened in on.
"Alright, you wanted to speak to me in private?"
"Yes, I think it to be important to tell you about something. This could decide whether or not you may want us even here or if we should leave."
Grant brought up two folding chairs for the two of them to sit down across from each other. They both sat and held eye contact.
"Me and Julia have been on the run for quite some time from these vampires. I mean everyone has been if I am honest. It has been hell ever since they came and a lot of people have died. Well, on the very night that they came from the shadows we were attacked. We were inside of our home and they busted in through the upstairs window where they found our bedroom."
"Why are you telling me this?"
Jake looked down at the ground beneath him as he sat in thought and then looked up at Grant.
"Julia was attacked by one of the vampires, bitten actually on the right side of her arm. I wasn't right there when it happened and I thought she was going to turn like all of us do upon being bitten. I didn't want to kill her, so we waited together and she didn't turn at all. She remains just as human as you and I. But...." Jake trailed off as he spoke.
"After she was bitten, the vampire who bit her began to morph and go through a change. It left it's bite on her, but the vampire itself reverted back to being mortal again. I do not know how exactly it took place, but it happened and still to this day I do not know what to make of it. They know about Julia and they have been after us ever since. The mark still looks just as fresh as the day she was bitten and there has been no change."
Grant sat back in the chair in silence without knowing how to take in all of this knowledge Jake just told him. He leaned forward contemplating about what his next move should be. The look on his face was rather uncertain.
"How old is the bite?" Grant asked.
"The bite is two years old. We have been on the move on our own for that long now until stumbling across your town."
Jake peered over at Grant and then began to lightly tap on his legs with his fingertips.
"I must go and see this for myself. I know that my men checked you before you all entered, but for our safety I must verify what you just told me. Do you understand?"
Jake nodded in agreement as they both stood up.
"Yes, I do. If you would like to do so tonight the visit is welcomed."
