Jealousy.
He was an only child, so the feeling of jealousy wasn't something he dealt with often, nor did he know how to handle it, so you'd have to forgive the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man if he suddenly launched himself toward the girl he liked, who was playfully chatting to another boy in her friend group as they entered the court.
Because that's exactly what the young Spider-Man was doing.
Within a split second, Miles was in front of Margo. Startled, she stepped back, but when she realized it was him, her eyes lit up with joy. That joy was swiftly replaced by confusion as she wondered what he was doing here.
Miles, on the other hand, was praying that her reaction would always be the same each time she saw him. That her eyes would always light up in the same way.
The lively chittering in the court died down. At the HQ, Margo was always too immersed in her work to initiate a chat with someone, so the simple fact that she was quite popular at her school wasn't sitting well with him, especially with both males and females crowding around her like bees to their queen. His sudden appearance only made it worse.
But Miles' eyes, from the tree to now, were glued to a particularly good-looking teen that was standing a little bit too close to Margo for his liking.
One that he definitely felt threatened by physically. His heart clenched and unclenched at an unhealthy speed under the gaze of dozens of students. He froze. Unlikely of him, yes, but he was in a dimension he wasn't quite familiar with, and out of all the pairs of eyes on him, he only knew one.
Miles lips pressed into a tight line. How the fuck was he gonna finesse his way out of this? He hadn't planned that far ahead.
Now that was just like him.
"Miles?"
Margo's voice shattered the silence in the court and saved him from his misery. A flurry of urgent whispers began to swirl around the court the second his name rolled out of Margo's pinkish-brown lips, indicating that she indeed was the primary attraction.
Miles winced in pain at the sudden loudness. He had grown accustomed to the dimension's tranquil, almost soundless setting, so when the student's chatter abruptly increased the volume, it felt like his ears were gonna bleed from the pain. He took a second to compose himself.
"You know him?" The boy asked, and Miles looked up.
And Oh, he definitely hated how deep his voice was. He hated his hair, which was similar to his own, but he still hated it. He hated his height and his clothes, despite the fact that everyone was wearing the same uniform. He just hated it.
There was no logic behind his feelings, and right now he wasn't looking for one. He simply hated the taller teen, and his face was conveying his feelings perfectly.
Miles was well aware that other men would be interested in Margo. She's captivatingly beautiful, inside and out. But that didn't mean he had to like it.
"Yeah, he's—"
"Her boyfriend."
With his arms crossed and in a tone of voice that probably would have been more at home on an exceedingly stubborn six-year-old, Miles uttered those words proudly.
Funny how he'd usually roll his eyes each time a character from a movie did something cringeworthy like this, but right now all he felt was pride. A massive collective drawl of breaths swept the court, followed by another wave of urgent whispers.
Margo facepalmed herself. She didn't have the time to be flustered by the Spider-Man from 1610 words, and Miles' eyes were still on the teen's face, waiting, anticipating the sudden dreadful emotions that, in any minute, he believed were gonna flash across the new boy's face, but strangely, he only smiled at Miles.
Smiled?
A quick elevation of Miles' eyebrows showed how confused he was. Margo wanted to clear his head and put an end to the pitiful embarrassment the young Spider-Man was gonna cause to himself, but she allowed her friend to do it in her stead.
The boy in question prodded Margo with his elbow, a smile dancing on his lips, an action that earned a glare from Miles despite how confused he was.
"Seems like I'm not the only one with a boyfriend now huh?" He joked.
....
It took Miles a minute to get what he meant, and when he did, his jaw fell and his eyes expanded, earning him a chuckle from Margo.
It was a lovely sound, strangely soft, and comforting despite the predicament he was in. Knots formed in Miles' stomach. His gaze was drawn to her as if he were under a spell, and he stared at her display of joy. She looked beyond gorgeous. He found himself beginning to smile along with her.
He probably looked dumb right then. He knew that, but he couldn't help himself. He would've stood there and listened to her melodious voice if he hadn't been rendered speechless by her friend's prior remark and if his cheeks weren't flushed with shame as the court broke into a series of laughs. Maybe a little bit of practice at hiding his jealousy was needed, for everyone could tell how bitter he was with just one glance.
Unable to save face any longer, Miles hurriedly shoved the flowers he had brought into Margo's hand before fleeing.
The laughter only got worse. Unable to take their mockery anymore, he turned around and yelled at the crowd with blazing cheeks. "Y'a really that bored, huh?" but by doing so, he simply made matters worse.
"Ahhh-" He fled with a series of incomprehensible mumbles.
Margo eyed the bouquet she was holding. She only mentioned her favorite flowers to him once, yet he recalled all of them and had made a bouquet of them... with a smile tugging at her lips, longing to become a full smile. She hastily bid goodbye to her friends before following him.
