"And what else can I get for you?" I asked the smiling elderly woman. "That'll be all, thank you sweetheart.", she said.

I'd been working at Paradis Rest Home for 3 years now, and I learned to love my job more and more everyday. I wheeled the check up cart to the next room. I'd become really close with most of the patients, and I looked forward to seeing them every day, but I longed for someone new to be admitted. I was getting tired of seeing all the same faces. My favorite patient is Carla Jeager. She is so kind to me, and she is the youngest patient we have, so she knows all the elderly tea. I wheeled my cart over to her room and knocked.

"Carla, it's me. I need to take your blood pressure." I heard scrambling inside the room and the door opened. Carla smiled at me. "Hi dear." she said. I strapped the machine to her bicep and we watched as it squeezed her arm. "What's new?" I asked. Carla looked at me and thought for a second. "Nothing much." She said. "Roberta and Don finally made up, and they share a room again." I laughed and nodded. "Those two are always bickering aren't they?", I said. Carla laughed and I removed the pump from her arm. "Blood pressure looks great, Car. Do you need anything before I move on to Donna?" Carla looked at me in shock and asked, "Didn't you hear? Donna passed away last night." I was astonished. No one had told me! I've been here all morning and no one else had mentioned this to me.

"Oh no." I whispered, "I didn't know. I need to clear up her room then, I guess." Carla looked and me with a somber expression and said as she closed the door, "Good luck sweetie." I dragged the cart to what used to be Donna's room.

Deaths here at PRH aren't rare, but they are never easy. Donna was 97 years old and she was a wonderful woman. Although I was devastated to see her go, a feeling of excitement rose in my chest. Death of a patient means admittance of a new one. We hadn't had a death since Mr. Arlert, so there weren't many new faces.

I was eager to see who they'd bring in next.
