Cursed Mateless: Alpha Zane

"Alpha, you have to come back." After a difficult decision, Zane finally decided to come back. He crossed over to the other side still unable to forget the young woman whose face lingered in his mind.

Upon his return to the pack, he met unwanted guests in the pack house.

"You insolent brat! You rejected a harmless invitation." His father shouted at him.

"A true Alpha is always busy, my dear old man." Zane smirked and turned to face him. "You wouldn't know that, would you? After all, you've never been one."

That immediately threw his father into a rage. Though the Alpha title ran in the family's blood, his father had never inherited it, a disappointment that still stung. When he learned that his own son had been chosen as the next Alpha, his heart soared with pride until the soothsayer's dire proclamation caused him disappointment.

“You!” he pointed his finger at Zane filled with fury.

"My dear old man," Zane sang sarcastically, "it's just a baby shower. Was it not enough that I sent my beta to y'all? What was the need for me to be there in person? After all I'm your filthy son, you filthy father of mine” he gritted his teeth.

“Zane! That's no way to speak to your father” his mother hissed from where she was seated.

“Hold it right there, mother dearest. He's not my father anymore neither are you my mother. We both disowned eachother the very day I became an abomination in your eyes. I'm still kind enough to have even sent my beta to y'all. I wouldn't even give a fu*ck about my cousin's affairs” Besides, him and his cousin have a sour relationship.

Zane couldn't yet fathom what his cousin's vendetta against him was but he suspected that it was linked to his family.

His parents stared at him in disbelief. It was true then, the rumors that he had changed were obviously real. He no longer acknowledged them as his parents even.

What does it matter to him that they called him an abomination? No, he was a cursed child and cursed children were meant to be put in their graves or they'll pollute the world.

"Knox, I think they've overstayed their welcome," Zane said in a chilling tone seeing no need to have them around any longer.
"Get them off my property before I show them something worse than their darkest nightmares," Zane commanded his Beta.

"You'll regret this disrespect!" his mother screeched.

"Come, let's go" his father said. "He won't last long on the seat anyway. The soothsayer's visit is near"

"To hell with the soothsayer!" Zane roared, his voice booming in the silent room. "That woman has no right to determine my fate. She will not step foot near this pack house" He meant it. If that woman succeeds in coming, he'll make sure her legs were chopped off.

"No wonder he's still mateless," said the last person he wanted to hear from, his ex-best Friend who had accompanied his parents.

He clenched his fists, barely resisting the urge to unsheathe his sword and run the man through. The only thing stopping him was the presence of his Beta, who quickly stepped between them.

If blood were to be spilt in the pack house, his subjects would only see him as more of a monster than they already did.

Once the unwanted guests had eventually been escorted from the pack house by the guards, Knox came rushing in to check on his Alpha. His Beta female was close behind, carrying a medical kit.

She and Knox were mates, though they were not yet engaged or married. Still, she always looked after him and cared for his wellbeing like a good mate does.

"Where does it hurt?" Melissa asked Zane, her voice laced with concern.

"My chest... feels tight," he managed to say before breaking into a fit of coughing, which sent blood flying from his mouth.

"Meli, call the doctor!" Knox ordered. But before Melissa could obey, Zane stopped her.

"No! Not today. I'll be fine if I take my meds." Zane's voice was firm, brooking no argument

"But–" Knox began, but Zane cut him off

"Knox, don't worry. I won't die," he said, his laughter ringing hollow in the quiet room. He reached into Knox's pocket and pulled out a handkerchief, wiping the blood from his mouth.

"That's not funny, Zane," Knox said, but he couldn't keep the concern from his voice.

"Alpha, perhaps we should consult another soothsayer," Knox suggested, his voice tinged with doubt. He no longer trusted soothsayers but he desperately wanted to find one who could help his Alpha. Zane didn't deserve to live in pain for the rest of his life.

"No more soothsayers," Zane said firmly. "My lack of a mate might be the problem," Knox tried to say something, but Zane cut him off.

"What about you and Melissa?" Zane asked, a knowing look in his eyes. "You're obviously in love with her, but you've never taken the step."

Knox's mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. He knew Zane was right, but he had no idea how to respond. He'd been in love with Melissa for years, but he'd never been able to find the courage to tell her. He has tried to ignore the bond between them but it was futile.

There, Melissa's cheeks turned pink and she looked at Knox who could feel the heat rising to his own face. He suddenly felt like a schoolboy caught doing something he shouldn't.

"This is about you, Alpha," Knox said, eager to change the subject

"I wish to return to the human realm," Zane announced, turning his gaze from Knox to Melissa. "I trust you both can keep the pack under control while I'm away." He needed to get away from the pack for a while, to clear his head and sort out his thoughts.

"I think that's a good idea," Knox said. "Would you like to head back now?"

"Absolutely," Zane replied, a sly grin spreading across his face. "I have some unfinished business over there."

Knox narrowed his eyes at Zane, wondering why he sounded strange, but he didn't press him. He knew Zane well enough to know that he would tell him if he wanted to.
