When The Cards All Fold//Prologue

My hands shook.
Perspiration dripped off my forehead in swirling torrents.
My mouth went dry.
The world around me faded in and out between darkness and the light of the New York sun.
My mother's soft face loomed above me. Darling, don't go! Oh, not yet. There's still so much left for you!
It was my father next. His beard was shaved, leaving only the faint whisper of the usually long brown goatee. Sweetheart, remember us. Remember Broadway? You have so much left to live for, and nothing to die for. You're too young.
My sister took his place in my eyes. Her blonde corkscrew curls which I used to be so envious of tickled my face. Her hand caressed my cheek. Don't hold on for me. Let me go. Let us go. I love you too much.
The next face was a shadowed one. I didn't know it. I tried to get away from it, but dark hands clamped on my shoulders. I opened my mouth to scream, but only a small squeak came out. I love you, Analisa. Did you forget me already?
The earth around my cracked and disfigured like a kaleidoscope, then fell away.

My pillow was drenched in my sweat. My hair matted against the silk fabric. The slim fabric of my tank top pressed to my skin damply, while my pajama shorts still hung loosely against my frame.
I shook the sleep from my groggy head, and padded out to the living room of my small apartment. I had been living in New York for three months and the terrible dreams had reoccured. I tried to pretend the change of scenery from my hometown of Sydney, Australia would change my dreams, but no such luck.
The shadowed figure was...new, to say the least. His face, or what I could see of it, had never graced my sleep before. I wondered where I knew him from. His low, gravelly voice wasn't new to me. Like seeing an old friend that you knew you knew, but not sure how you knew.
My mom, dad and sister, Delilah weren't new to my dream. They were always there, begging for my life. From what, I didn't know. Car crash? Fire? Untimely bungee jumping accident?
I pulled a cup out of my wood cabinet, for once not thinking about how annoying it was to be so tall. My arms were as long and lean as the rest of me. I filled the cup with water from the tap and leaned against the counter, still shaken.
The dreams were often. They sometimes even came in the day while I got sleep in between takes. Being an actress in NY, you take all the sleep you can get.
The clock above my oven read 3 a.m. I prayed that I would be on time for the film I had at 7 that morning.
I had just booked a role in a new blockbuster film, Just One Yesterday. It was my breakthrough role, and my agent, Clarisse was ecstatic. She'd be at my door step at 5, no doubt.
In the meantime I sat down on my couch and wearily flipped through channels on my TV screen, which seared at my eyes.
I settled on an episode of The Office.
Soon, sleep captured me in it's warm embrace.
