"Hello darling, how are you?" Maddie squeals as she embraces me in a tight hug.
"Hi Maddie, I'm good, how are you?" We enter the café we met outside and order a coffee. It's freezing cold outside and the wind is howling against the windows.
"I'm good, but we're not talking about me today; I have to hear everything about your new job," she says as she sips her coffee. I chuckle at her eagerness. Maddie has been my best friend for 4 years. We first met when we bumped into each other on the street; me spilling a hot cup of coffee on our clothes.
"It's good so far, I really like it. It's exciting and filled with action.." I tell her everything about what happened today; how Harry convinced my boss that I went with him to the crime scene, how we investigated the apartment and that my back is sore from when a man jumped out of the closet. She laughs slightly at this and I admit; it must have been quite the sight. I tell her about all my colleagues and even about how the office is furnitured.
"It's sounds so exciting! Tell me more about that Harry guy," she insists placing her, now empty, cup on the tray.
"Uhm, well, he's tall.. and handsome," I smile and flush and she nudges my arm smirking at me.
"More, tell me more,"
"He is pretty rude at times and he seems to have a high status at the office. He even threatened me the first day, telling me he could have me fired in an instant," Maddie seems a little shocked at this.
"Wow, he sounds like a handful," she laughs and I laugh with her.
"Yeah, but he's not for me. He doesn't even really seem to like me in the slightest," I admit, looking down at my steaming coffe.
"Oh come on Alexandra, he doesn't even know you yet," she encourages, but I know she's wrong.
We agree that it's time to go home since it's already ten and we're both going to work tomorrow. I wave at her as she disappears into the dark of the streets. It's freezing and I curse when I realize that the last bus went a few minutes ago. I decide on walking; my apartment is only like.. Thirty blocks down. The sooner I get walking the sooner I'll be home I think to myself.
I shiver and hug myself sliding my hands up and down my arms to create some warmth. I have been walking a few blocks when a car slows down and comes to a full stop. It's a big car; an Audi. Someone rolls down the window and Harry comes into sight.
"What are you doing out this late?" He asks me and I walk a little closer so that I'm able to hear him.
"Walking home, the last bus went ten minutes ago," I explain, shivering when another cold wind whips around me.
"Get in,"
"Harry it's fine, I can wa.."
"Just get in," he demands, obviously not accepting my rejection to his kind gesture.
I cross the road and quickly get in the passenger's seat. Harry immediately turns up the warmth and I thank him quietly. He makes sure I'm buckled up before accelerating down the road.
"Where were you coming from?" he asks and I can't help but laugh and I bite my lip to hold it in.
"Something funny?" he grumbles, annoyed at my giggling.
"No sorry, you just sounded a lot like my father," I explain trying to hold in the bubbles of laughter.
"Just answer my question," he demands firmly, looking at me quickly.
"Oh, uhm, I was at the café with a friend," he doesn't answer and for some time it's silent in the car. Sometimes I feel him looking at me, his eyes burning into the side of my head. I pretend I don't notice and look out of the window. When he's not paying attention I throw a glance at him; his large hands are firmly gripping the steering wheel and even in the dark I can sense the green of his eyes. His hair is pushed back on top of his head and he's wearing a white t-shirt and tight black jeans. It's very different from seeing him in uniform, but I like his look. His mouth curls into a smirk and I know I've been caught staring. I quickly look away as a blush creeps into my cheeks.
"You know for a federal agent you're not very tough," he chuckles. His voice is hoarse and deep and I blush further at his comment.
"I think your toughness adds up for the both of us," I answer quietly as I look down at my hands. The smirk on his face fades and I can feel him looking at me again, but he doesn't answer.
When we're finally at my apartment I unbuckle and get out.
"Thank you Harry, it was nice of you,"
"You're welcome. Lock the door," he tells me and I nod shutting the door. When I'm inside the building I hear him drive off and I quickly make my way to the elevator.
What a weird day.
