When I walked into the house I noticed Mylo was over on the couch, cuddling with Ty. “I’m home,” I called into the house. “Welcome back,” Ty and Mylo said in unison. “Hey, Sammy.” Dad greeted me with a plate of food.
“Thanks, dad.” I said, nodding to him as I walked back to my room. Setting the plate down on my table I sat on my bed and thought about the days previous. What prophecy…? The thought popped into my head. How Am I Supposed to be connected?
All will be revealed in time. Leuc said. How are we linked, at least? I asked him. We have a psychic link… our thoughts are shared, and we are interconnected. He told me. “Hmrm…” I sounded aloud. I don’t know much about it either, actually. Perhaps we will find out together. I pulled out my phone and Dialled the number he had given me.
Texting the number, ‘Thanks, and sure.’ I shut my phone off and started to eat breakfast. After I was done I headed downstairs, there was a note that said Dad was at work.
I placed my phone down on the coffee table, sitting next to Ty, and Mylo who were both asleep. I took my phone again. I was scrolling through TikTok when a text message popped up. ‘Time for training, You up for it?’ It was from Leuc. ‘‘Sure. I replied back and left a note on the table for Ty before heading out.
I walked down to Leuc’s house, looking at the trees in the forest behind our houses. Rodney forest was so peaceful. Arriving to Leuc’s house, I walked up and knocked on the door.
“Come in!” I heard him call from inside. I opened the door, and walked in. His house was nicely furnished, with a nice, cherry red carpet underneath a brown coffee table. A matching brown couch and then a loveseat on the other side. There was a television on the wall in front.
“Hey,” Leuc greeted me from the other side of the room. “My mom’s not here right now, but be careful of err… profanity when she’s around.” I was surprised just how old are you Luec? The question popped up in my head.
“Sixteen” He answered, aloud. “I forgot that you could read my mind…” I said with a shudder. Vice versa. He told me. “Is it… voluntary, or can we just hear each other’s thoughts?”
Is it voluntary? Or is it just when we’re near each other? I heard him ask, to himself. That answers that question. “Hm?” He looked curious. “I guess it’s just when we’re near each other.” I looked at him. “Ah, guess that makes sense…” he said with an admittedly nervous chuckle. I'll have to be careful… about what? He looked at me. “I’m not keeping secrets, you know… but my thoughts are… odd.” he said.
“I believed I was born to cause chaos for so long, my thoughts are probably worse…” we both chuckled. “Well,” he started. “Let’s get started with something… simple.” I tuned in. “I want to explain your powers to you.”
“You’re a hellhound, you know what that is, right?” I nodded. “Yes, you were born with your powers, but needed something to initiate them.”
“Like… what?” I asked him. “Like this.” he said before I felt pressure on my shoulders. Instinctively, I ducked down and felt the flame consuming my nerves for a second. Before I knew it the feeling passed but I felt the soft carpet beneath my paws. “Instinct.”
He told me, simply. “I… I see…” I said, a little shaken. “And you know how to turn back.” I nodded and sat up. Are you…. Not gonna? He asked. I lie down and focus on turning back. I felt flame, then nothing but opposable thumbs back on my hands.
I stood up. “Show off.” Leuc scoffed, though I could tell it was playful. “You taught me!” I teased. “No, that was simply you,” he said. “ Your instincts are sharp, for sure Newt.” For the first time in a while I felt genuine praise come my way. “Oh- uhm… thanks?” I don’t know how to react… I thought, embarrassed.
He moved over to the couch, I did too, taking it as a cue that we were moving on. “There isn’t much I can teach you… You’d have to learn more hands-on…” He said after a moment. I nodded. It was understandable that something so abstract to normal teaching would be using an alternative method.
“So, what’s next?” He shook his head. “I don’t know, that’s where the day will take us.” I thought for a moment. “Is there anything else we’d need to do?” He shook his head. “No, I didn’t really think through what we’re going to have to do when I said training.”
There was a moment of silence. “Well, what else did you really want to do?” He looked at me. “I wanted to teach you how to shift forms, but you’re such a quick learner that I don’t need to.” he said.
Perhaps I could contact someone to teach him something… we need the day's content. He thought. “You know Loki, the Norse god?” I nodded. “You know of his son, Fenrir?” Nodded again. “I think he can teach you, nevermind how prickly he can be…”
“Where can I find him?”
Leuc instructed me to find Fenrir, he said he was often at the library. “He’s a very prickly person, though he’s nice enough.” I remember him saying. “He goes by an alias, though he calls himself Finn. That's his human name. Whatever that means…” he muttered.
Rainville’s library was surrounded by a fenced off area, that’s filled with Ivy, and other foliage. It’s right next to the elementary school, where my little sister Rain was going. She was named after the town, I don’t know why dad chose the name.
Nevermind that. I told myself as I walked toward the door of the library. I pushed on the handle, turning the knob as I entered the building. The librarian at the desk fit the description that Leuc had given me. “He’s tall, with auburn hair and peridot green eyes…”
“He has fair skin, and toned cheekbones… Visible eyebags and wears a grey sweatshirt most days.” I recalled what Leuc told me in my head. That looks like the guy. I told myself.
“Gray, you’d realised i’d be at work, why didn’t you ask earlier?” He asked someone, presumably ‘Gray’ on the other end of the phone. He sounded warm, fuzzy, even. I didn’t expect that… He chuckled. “Kay, i’ll bring it over after work, I get off soon.”
He seemed to have noticed me, because he mouthed “just a second,” before saying his goodbyes to Gray. “Hey, what could I do for you?” he’d ask. “Isn’t your name Finn?” I asked innocently. “Yeah, how’d you know?” he asked, “I’m not wearing my name tag…”
“Leuc said you could help me?” I paused. How would I explain this? He chuckled. “Ah, my brother’s friend, should have known.” he said in a drier voice. Oh? I was intrigued, though I kept it to myself.
“What do you know about me?” He said in that dry voice I had just now heard. “Fenrir… son of Norse god Loki, a hellhound…” I uttered. “You’ve studied.” He sounded impressed. “I’m just going off of what Luec told me.”
He shook his head. “I’m off work right now so let’s go. My partner is coming over to our house so I want to be there when he arrives.” he said. I nodded and I’d walk back to Leuc's house, Finn trailing behind a little bit, as he’d have to clean up.
Pulling out my phone, I called Leuc. “Hey,” I started when he’d pick up. “I found Finn, you didn’t tell me he was your brother, though…” He chuckled. “It’s a technicality, we’re mad…at each other… it’s not really the best relationship…”
“Right…” I said, unconvinced. “Look, the most important thing right now is that you can learn properly.” He said. Although they weren’t on great terms, I felt like this was important enough to get them talking again.
I nodded. “Okay.” Leuc started, glad that I understood. “Finn’s a prick, but he’s a good teacher. You listen to him, you understand, you’re golden when It comes to learning.” Right, so he’s just like a grumpy maths teacher. I thought.
“Like a grumpy maths teacher, yes.” He teased me. “I forget that you can read my mind.” I said, amused, and a little disturbed that the field reached that far in the first place… I was a few miles away from his house, for reference. “It’s not my fault that I can…” He muttered.
Even over the phone, we talked for a long while, chuckling over things, here and there, also talking over training. After a few moments I’d learned a lot about him. And I think I might've had a crush… shit. NEVERMIND THAT! I told myself.
Nevermind what? He asked. Nothing… I heard him laugh over the phone. “Sure…” A pause. “I won’t pry though…” he took a more serious tone. It's nothing bad… just kind of embarrassing. Well now I want to pry! “Know what, Bye!”
A laugh was cut off by the tone of me hanging up. You can never really escape my wrath, Sam! I audibly sighed. Finn walked out the door. “Ready to train?” Oh shit I forgot about that… How…? Hush, Leuc… The crush was gone. He’s just an idiot.
“Yeah.” We started our trek to his and Leuc’s house. “So, how’d you stumble upon the devil?” He asked casually. “It’s a long story…” But I told him anyway… starting from the beginning.
“Oh… dear God…” He looked to me a mixture of sympathetic and concerned. “I don’t know how it happened… I was in a state of shock for most of it.”
He looked to be in thought for a moment. “I’ll need to explain how this shit works, huh…” He said to me, unenthusiastically. I nodded. He sighed. “Angels, Demons, et cetera… We come from a common ancestor.” He began explaining. I was in for the long run.
“Yin, and yang. Brothers.” I tilted my head to the right side. “Like Chinese mythology? I thought one was a girl and one was a boy.” He chuckled. “That’s the common belief, yes.” he paused and I took the opportunity to speak again. “So then where do yin and yang come from?”
“Astute observation. They were created alongside the universe, alongside a third force. Yin was meant to have control over the dark forces, while Yang took hold of the light.”
“Then who was the third force?” He sighed. “That hasn’t been documented yet. Yin and Yang fused, creating A soul that will aid in the world’s saving."Is he referring to me? I thought. “The soul was born 13 years ago now.” not me. Okay.
“Who is it?” He shook his head. “Unknown as of now. He will take the form of a deer, light and dark. Graceful in nature, yet powerful enough to end the universe as it is.”
A chill ran down my spine. “Back to Angels and Demons. We are one big family, a large web of important figures in history, to nobodies… Leuc is only 16 years of age, while I am 22. Our eldest sibling takes the role of ‘god.’ While Leuc is the devil, after Satan died recently.”
“Wait, deities can die?” He nodded. “We can, but we live for millennia. Satan died of old age.” I took in this new information. “But how do I fit into all of this?” He responded instantly. “There is a prophecy. A group of five that will save the world. It’s cheesy, but true.”
“You are one of those five.” That’s a lot of pressure to put onto a bunch of kids, presumably. “Are you part of the five?” He chuckled. “No. I will not take part in the final battle, according to the prophecy.”
“What is the evil we face?” I asked. “The Creator.” was all he replied before we arrived at his house, Leuc sitting on the porch steps. “Well, We’re here, Let’s start training, Samuel!”And after an hour…
“LOOK OUT, SAM!” Leuc’s voice rang across the room and I dogged, simultaneously shifting into ‘hound form’ as Finn had dubbed it. We were in the most reinforced room of the house, which was the basement.
“That was close…” I’d mutter to myself before pouncing onto another spot to dodge another fire attack. “You’re good at dodging, but how about you ATTACK!” Finn teased. Little did he know I was stalling for time as I felt fire burn my paws. I dodged one final time before lunging at him.
I clawed at his head, letting the flame loose into the area. “FUCK, OW!” I heard him cry out as I flung myself over him as if we were playing leapfrog. “Nice agility, Sam!” Leuc called from the other side of the room.
I started pacing back and forth, my guard still up. “I think that’s enough training, today…” Finn said with a hiss of pain. I took that as a cue to shift back to my human form. The pain that I felt while shifting between forms has greatly lowered.
“Okay, so you’ve mastered shifting, and you’re a natural at combat.” Leuc summarised. I blushed. “I’m not that good… I just started!”
“Whatever you say, Newt…” Leuc muttered. God, he can be so cute sometimes… I felt the flush of my cheeks but decided not to comment. “What are we going to do now?”
“Im going to rest for a while…” Finn answered my question. “My head hurts.” I nodded. “I think i’m going to go take a nap, if not that then coffee.” I muttered. Leuc nodded. “I'm going to my room.”I Fell onto my bed once home, my exhaustion apparent to my parents. Dad sat on my bed. “You need to take it easy, son…” He started. Please don’t lecture me about my bones, dad… I groaned internally. “You may be healed completely but you’re still not back up to full strength.” That was true.
I was a lot weaker in my human form than ever before… though in hound form I was incredibly strong already, with minimal training. What if I'm weakened in hound form as well? Just how powerful am I meant to be?
I let my thoughts wander as I lay on my mattress. They led to Leuc calling me cute. Oh god, I did that? Leuc chimed in. yes. Was my simple response. I’m SO sorry Samuel, I told you I don’t filter my thoughts well. You’re too nice to be the devil, Leuc. I told him.
I’m working on it! His chuckle rang through my head. “Dad, I get it, I’ll take it easy!” I groaned. “I just want to take a nap right now!” I muttered. Dad took that as a cue to leave, with a small chuckle. Soon after that I drifted off to dreamland.“Up.” A new voice welcomed me. I was confused. I was just in bed a second ago… “Get UP.” The voice commanded. Sitting up, I saw A tall, pretty girl, with long, blonde hair, eyes the same colour as Leuc’s and dotted freckles. She was dressed in a white gown, not puffy, but appeared regal.
An angel. Did I die? I asked myself “No.” she responded. “But you are in heaven.” I Shook my head. “I'm confused.” “No, you are not dead, you are having an out of body experience.” I tilted my head. “What’s the purpose for this?” I asked.
“I need to instruct you.” She stated. “...Instruct me on what?” I was doubtful. “Your newly developed powers.” She said, “Who are you?” I’d ask her. “God. or, what humans know as god. My name is Abigail.” ‘Abigail’ told me. “Like, AbbI? Leuc’s older sister Abigail?” I asked.
AbbI nodded. “I will join you on earth soon enough, but for now, You will face many smaller evils in the chain of command. I will arrive with help as soon as possible, but until then,” she paused. “Be careful. And use your power wisely. Be careful, Samuel.”
My eyes shot open. Her words linger in my head. Be careful… What was there to be careful about?
