it was bella's birthday, and the whole pack and her human friends were celebrating. it was also the first time her and jacob would be going out with friends as an official item, and she was equally if not more nervous about that.

after jacob had showed her his new ability, she had been a bit hesitant. but that lasted only an hour. with the whole wolf..thing. came (what she called) the perks. jacob was now her own personal space heater. he was her own personal sun.

another perk was his shoulders. this verged more on guilty pleasure, but his shoulders had become even broader and bella loved it. she could've gone on forever about his shoulders, but she refrained and decided she'd tell the girls later.

jacob sat at her desk while she was sitting in the edge of her bed when he explained imprinting, and how he'd imprinted on her. she was beyond flustered and overwhelmed. she had barley spoke above a whisper when she asked him to take it slow—edward had damaged her beyond belief.

jacob, as always, was understanding.

he spent months upon months by her side helping her put herself back together.

he started at the ankles, allowing her a sturdy foundation before working his way up, building the framing of her body and carefully putting her wrists and fingers together and reattaching her head. he handed her the pieces of her own heart with such softness.

finally, in june, after graduating highschool and signing up for an online college, did they verge on anything romance. he took her out to dinner in seattle and bought her a malt after (she was surprised he remembered she liked them better than milkshakes).

on the drive home, the sky opened up and rain poured from it. jokingly she asked if he was up for dancing in the rain, he said yes and pulled her onto an empty street. his warm hands guided her as he waltzed around the asphalt. he kept her pressed against her body, hoping to keep her from getting sick. but he loved it. being so close to bella, and hearing her laugh echo through the street made his heart flutter.

her hair stuck her face and her face was red from laughter, but she didn't care. not one bit. she had dreamed of having a moment of dancing in the rain, she'd always been a hopeless romantic, but her brain always seemed to remind her it probably wouldn't happen.

they danced together for hours, sang loudly (and badly) but they didn't care. in that time, no one else else mattered, nobody else existed. it was only bella and jacob. in a moment of courage, she leaned up and kissed him. jacob's movement faltered, and he returned the kiss.

when they pulled away, she laughed in embarrassment and buried her head in his chest. he took her home shortly after and made sure she warmed up properly.

he took her on the first official date the next day. they went to first beach collected shells and watched for whales from the cliffs. that night he made a fire and the cuddled and made s'more's.

the day after he took her to the local hair salon and watched her fondly as she chopped off her hair. it fell just above her collar bones, and (according to the stylist) framed her face much better than her long hair. after that he took her to the diner and they got berry cobbler. something she'd long forgotten her love of.

time passed quickly and their relationship grew and grew until finally, in august he asked her to be his girlfriend. she said yes. however, they kept it quiet, bella's classes and jacob's patrols made telling everyone difficult but they would manage.

on bella's nineteenth birthday, she woke up to breakfast in bed, and a quiet morning in with jacob, who clung to her side happily. (another perk, jacob was about a million times more clingy.) she had a small party/lunch with her dad who gave her a book collection she'd been wanting to get.

that night, she met up with the pack, now included embry and quill, and had a party in the forest. all her friends arrived and mingled. bella was beaming the whole time, and jacob was happy because she was happy.

around 11 her human friends left, and the pack minus jacob left an hour later. not once did she comprehend the meadow they were standing was the meadow that edward used to take her to. once it was only them, they curled up under a tree on the edge of the circular meadow, and admired the stars.

they shined with a practiced brilliance, that bella could only wonder how long it took to learn. a rustling started her, it also made jacob look away from her for the first time that day. "cullen." he spat coldly. pulling bella into him.

edward stepped out. he only asked bella "why are you with this..mutt?" bella felt a red and raw rage course through her, but she stayed silent and only looked away from them. "bella, darling, i'll be at my family's house when you're ready to have me again." edward couldn't believe how childish she was being.

the rest of the cullen clan was in shock. some feeling much better than others. rosalie felt her guilt dissipate. bella hadn't suffered from a monsters hand, and instead lived happily with her new boyfriend. emmett was glad both to know bella was alive, and that his wife was happy. bella was a good friend, and while awkward was genuine.

jasper smiled small at the news, he doubted he'd ever have enough control to go near her, but knowing she'd live a long human life was enough. while edward was scorned with jealousy and anger. bella was being a brat, pretending to like a child to make him jealous.

esme didn't say one way or the other and decided to straighten up the house instead. carlisle fed into his sons emotions and tried to console him, telling him that bella would come back to him soon.

jacob took bella to his house to sleep over in, since she felt safer over the border. edward couldn't get to her here. they explained the situation to billy, before calling charlie. "edward showed back up at the party and she's really freaked out. is it okay if she stays here with me?" charlie scowled at the mention of his daughters ex. "of course jacob. sleep well." he said, and talked briefly with billy before he himself went to bed.

bella didn't get much sleep that night.
