The thought of Morgana La Fey being a real person was weird enough. But what was even weirder, was the fact that she was standing right in front of me. Lincoln had brought me to the foyer of his home, which was down the stairs outside his bedroom. The room was massive, and I knew there was no way I was in the house we had picked him up from that morning. His mother had just come through the giant oak double doors at the front of the house. I expected a tall, black-haired woman with a magic staff. Piercing purple eyes and a black dress. Maybe I watch too much T.V. because that is not at all what I was met with. It was somehow worse.
Standing a solid foot shorter than me, in yoga pants and a windbreaker was the notorious Morgana La Fey. Her blonde hair was strung up in a messy bun, and a smartwatch on her wrist. Running shoes pieced the whole shocking sight together.
"Oh, hi Ms. La Fey, Lincoln here was just saying you wanted to meet me," I said, quickly realizing she wasn't an immortal witch from Arthurian legend.
"Please, call me Morgan. I see Lincoln was not lying about you."
She had an almost undetectable Boston accent hidden in her words, just enough to tell.
I made my way down the stairs quickly to shake her hand. My mom did a pretty great job at teaching me manners. When I reached out, however, she remained still. The look in her eyes was very troubling. Almost as if I was some kind of specimen she was studying. I put my hand back in my pocket, trying to avoid another awkward encounter
"Lincoln here informed me you have anger issues and severe headaches. I may be able to help with that."
It took a moment to realize, but finally, I said "I never said anything about headaches to him..."
Before I could have a second to fully grasp what she meant, or how she knows anything about me, or how I even got in this house in the first place, our scenery changed. For lack of a better word, we teleported. There was no swirling smoke or bright lights. One second I am sitting in my friend's room, the next I'm standing in one of the largest rooms I have ever seen.
We stood in what could only be described as a throne room. 50-foot stone pillars lined the walls, leading up to a giant golden throne. It stood out in the dimly lit space. The only light in the room was coming from the stained glass windows lining the sides of the building. From what I could see through the glass, I pieced together that wherever we were, it was nighttime.
I spun around trying to get a better idea of what my surroundings were, but a glint of bright light caught the corner of my eye. I turned to see Lincoln's mother become engulfed in blinding white light. I shielded my vision with my hand, but the glow was so strong it was still hurting my eyes.
"This is always cool to see, but it's good to keep your distance," Lincoln said.
"Why? What the hell is going-?" Before I could finish my sentence, the golden light enveloping Morgan burst out like an ocean of beautiful flames. The fire seemed to have weight, as they poured out and came to stop at my feet. Looking up, I see Morgan now standing much taller than me, at least by a couple of feet. She now had long, curly black hair going all the way down to her waist. The purple eyes I had expected before now shined bright in the dark room. She wasn't wearing her sneakers anymore either. Somehow she had donned a scaly red dress that encompassed a few feet of the ground around her. On her back seemed to sprout giant bat's wings that rested seamlessly along her spine.
"Welcome Son of Fire. To King Arthur's throne room."
I tried not to cringe. I couldn't believe what I was seeing, so my brain was trying to come up with whatever reasoning it could. My mind scrambled to piece together what was happening, and the closest I could get to having a sane thought was remembering the LARP guys from my old school.
