I walked through the thick forest, the trees as tall as castle towers, the sweet flowers littering the grass, the birds cooing in their nests, and the sweet sun peeking in through the thick canopy, I followed my map to the absolute millimetre! I was following the correct path on the map, using my books to ensure it was the right time. Season. Weather. Double checking everything I possibly could. But I felt overwhelmingly confident.
"This. Is. Stupid!" Minho yelled as he was about one hundred yards behind me
"It's not stupid" I sighed stopping a moment
"Yes, it is. You are obsessed"
"I'm not obsessed! I know what in doing it'll be there"
"Yeah, what have you said about the last nine places we've visited." He said "Newt. Face it. It's a story nothing more. Now let's get back to that village and have a warm bed for the night and a beer"
"It's not just a story I know it's not why would you believe me?"
"Because we've been up and down the damn continuant looks for this stupid thing. They. Aren't.real!
"I know they're real!"
"Newt. It's just a story."
"It's not just a story, I saw the truth of it in his eyes"
"Newt... finding this thing. Is not going to bring your dad back"
"..I know that" he nodded
"Look if you are really sure about this place, we can come back first light tomorrow. But it's getting later were tried, we all need a good bed and a damn bath"
"If you wanna go... you go." I told him "I... I can't go without knowing"
"Alright," he sighed "Thomas?"
"Yeah?" Thomas asked as he made his way through the tree he had been a good distance behind us carrying all our stuff with him
"We're going back to the village"
"Really? I just got here" he sighed exhausted he dropped all our stuff on the grass and sighed "Fine Have fun looking for stuff newt"
"Thanks I'll see you guys back in the village as soon as I can" I told them
They both took what they needed of our stuff and turned back to head out the woods back towards the village we visited.
I gathered up the rest of the stuff and continued on with my map, I didn't blame them for getting tried and leaving honestly I'm surprised it took so long before they gave up we had been searching for over a year now and found nothing to show for our work I don't blame them for giving up, but I can't I just can't.
Soon enough I found the edge of the mountain and its dark rune-covered cave. I stopped and took my book making sure to note all the runes and their order making a note of the sweet blue glow the runes seemed to emanate from them. They matched the other runes in similar spots I had found so once I noted it all down I hitched up my bag and headed inside the dark gave. I took a candle from my pocket and lit it with my lighter as I headed deeper through the stone cave the only light was my candle as I moved deeper and deeper until the cave opened up. To a huge cave with a murky water pool and runes carved around the stone. I tripped over a loose rock and dropped my candle into the water plunging the cave into utter darkness, The pool then changed from murky water to this bright clear blue that glowed the bright light from below, and the runes around the cave all glowed the same sweet blue.
"Whoa" I gasped "it's beautiful"
I found myself a place to sit by the water and took my book making notes on all the rules, the pool, the light. Everything I possibly could write down.
I made camp inside the cave waiting patiently for any sign of life but It got late and I know it's time to get back guess I was just being stupid.
I began to gather my things when I heard the sound of water.
I turned quickly and froze up.
There in the pool. Clear as day. Loomed a merling.
And... she's beautiful!
She loomed in the middle of the glowing blue pool, the water sat perfectly at her waist, above the water was a beautiful body pale ghostly white almost translucent white, long blue hair the reached the water seeming to glitter in the light, her skin bare only her hair covering her ... sizable chest, blue webbed fins on her elbows and her waist. Below the water this dark blue tail with a few fins across it, the tall so large the end actually was out the water across the pool.
I grabbed my book and began writing everything I possibly could about her every little detail.
But she saw me and tried to swim away
"No please. It's okay I'm not going hurt you" I reassured her as she hid behind a rock "I won't hurt you I promise." I reassured her moving closer to the water showing my hands trying to prove I wasn't a threat "it's okay. No one's going to hurt you"
She spoke but I didn't understand the language
"I didn't mean to scare you, I've actually been looking for a merling for years. I can barely believe your real"
