As I finished up the load of laundry, I felt a sense of relief. With the last hoodie hung up on the line, I moved over to my washing tub and threw in the next load. The water started to heat up, and I left it be for a while.
Wiping my hands dry from all the damp laundry, I took a moment to look at myself. I was wearing my favourite pair of small sneakers, My grey denim shorts had been with me for a while now, but I still loved how they fit me. The blue vest stolen from one of the boy's stuff when the box came up, My white hoodie was wrapped around my waist, waiting for the next time I needed to cover up.
I took a closer look at my hair, which I had styled earlier in the morning. It was a vibrant Y/H/C, flowing down my back in a long braid. I had tied it up with a blue ribbon, to match the colour of my vest.
As I waited for the new load to soak and heat up, I decided to take a break and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. As I strolled across the soft green grass, I passed by the kitchen, the slicers, and the med jacks. However, my destination was the garden. The fresh and sweet-smelling air was refreshing, and I couldn't help but admire the beautiful plants growing slowly. The garden was a sight to behold, and as I made my way through it, I caught sight of something familiar.
Newt was standing by the raised beds, surrounded by an assortment of tools and gardening supplies. He had his hands deep in the rich soil, carefully planting some of the new cuttings. Despite the warm weather, he wore a tattered and patched pair of brown trousers, along with a well-worn orange vest. His dirty white hoodie was covered in stains and tatters he never lets me wash it, and his blonde hair was a messy mop of dusty, dirty strands.
I couldn't resist sneaking up on him, giggling silently to myself as I approached. I took care to step lightly and avoid any twigs or leaves that might give me away. When I was close enough, I reached out and tickled his waist,
"Hi Newt!"
"Ahhh!" He yelped jumping out of his skin and turning to face me, his eyes went wide, his cheeks turned red, and his arms quickly pulled on the hem of his hoodie, "Uhh I uhh I umm I ughhh H- Hi - Hi-low-" He stuttered before he took a firm breath before he finally spoke, "Hi Y/n."
"Hi," I smiled, "Whatcha doin'"
"Gardenin'" He gulped,
"I see that," I laughed, "What are you up to?" I smiled leaning on the raised beds to see his work,
"Oh ughhh, I uhhh well uhh just some cuttings from the beans and uhh some runners from the strawberries,"
"Awww cute, well you still owe me a big bowl of strawberries when they're ready,"
"Yeah, yeah I know," He rubbed the back of his neck,
"Good, well you have fun I need to get back to the laundry," I smiled tussling his hair as I turned to head back to work,
"Yeah, I uhhh- Y/n?" he asked,
So I turned back to face him, "Yeah Newt?"
"I uh- it's nothing, don't worry about it."
"You sure?"
"Yeah, it's nothing, you head back to work."
"Alright, see you at dinner," I waved,
"See ya!" he waved,
I found a comfortable spot under a tall tree, right next to the deadheads. I bit into my nice juicy apple, which was to be my breakfast for the day. The glade was still quite peaceful, as most of the runners were still asleep. The few who were awake were heading to the showers to start their day. The kitchens were bustling with activity, preparing the runners' packs and prepping for breakfast. I could smell the aroma of fresh sizzling sausages from the distance. Most of the boys were either snoring in their hammocks in the homestead or lying on the grass, still dozing off. I started a fire under my washing pot, anticipating the pile of dirty clothes that would soon be coming in from the boys. The sun had just started to rise, casting a warm golden glow over the glade, and the birds were chirping happily. It was a serene and peaceful morning, and I felt content to just sit back and enjoy the tranquillity.
