~ chapter VI ~

"You're avoiding me."

Her voice sends a shiver down my spine.

The usual cheerful girl has gone, and the person in front of me is cold and vicious.

"Why?" She asks, voice laced with resentment.

"Leo is going to propose to me." I blurt out. "And I'm going to say yes."

"Do you want to say yes?"

"Yes!"

"Then why do you sound like you're trying to convince yourself?"

I falter. "You're a bump in that path, but I'll-"

"A bump? Oh, Hazel..." Her dead voice holds a hint of evil, "I'm not a bump, I'm a whole fucking new road and you better accept that."

"W- what do you mean?"

She walks over swaying her hips. Her finger trails along the table before she pauses and looks up at me.

"Hazel, baby. I'm not letting myself be merely a bump, you will be mine."

I snort. "In your dreams."

"Oh it is in my dreams, and it's in yours." She whispers into my ear. She licks my earlobe and then retreats slightly. "You're lesbian, Hazel. Just admit it."

"I love Leo."

"As a friend."

"I'm going to marry him, Zoe."

"Fine. Then let me be your side chick."

"What!?" I burst.

"But I will make you so obsessed that you'll leave him for me anyway."

I roll my eyes. "That's pretty cocky coming from the other woman."

"Only woman."

I lift my chin. "Zoe I can't just leave Leo, we've been together five years."

She flings her hands up. "Alright, fine. Look, it's your choice in the end. I won't force you to do anything, but I like you Hazel and I want you to."

"Zoe. You don't understand how hard this is, I- I mean..."

I raise a hand and rub the bridge of my nose.

Tears brim in my eyes.

"I betrayed him. I cheated on Leo, I took his love for granted and betrayed him."

She falters.

She pulls me into her embrace and rubs my back.

"I- I'm sorry. I didn't think of it like that."

"I betrayed him and he's my best friend," I sob, "but I fucking love us, I've never felt this before and I don't know what to do."

"Shhh, it's okay. We'll work it out, okay?"

"No... no matter what I do I'm bound to hurt one of you."

She stays silent.

"I'm sorry for loving you." She whispers.

"No, don't be sorry this isn't your fault-"

"It is, technically."

I sigh. "It's mine too."

"Well fuck, this is a predicament."

"Zoe I don't know what to do," I sob.

"Hey hey hey, it's okay..."

I tug at the back of her shirt. "Please don't leave me," I say under my breath.

"Never. I'll always be here for you,"

"Thank you. I'm so sorry about everything,"

She snuggles her nose in the crook of my neck. "It's alright."

"I need to choose one of you eventually, don't I?"

"Kind of... but if you choose him, I'll always be here for you, okay?"

"Do you think... Leo would ever forgive me?"

"He loves you very much, so there's a small chance he might,"

"I'll tell him either way," I explain.

"Good, honesty is the best policy as they say," she says with a giggle.

After a moment of silence she softly kisses my neck where she was resting her head.

"Hazel, I love you. I know you love Leo too, I don't care to be honest,"

"I can't keep having one foot in, one out though,"

"True... but maybe, we can all work it out together?"

"What do you mean Zoe?"

She falters for a moment, leaving a kiss further up my neck.

"If we admit to Leo what's being on between us, we can see how he reacts,"

"That's true,"

"We can all discuss it, see what happens, you know?"

"Do you really think that would work?"

"I mean, I'm not sure... but he, if he hates you and leaves you have me, and if he's chill with it we can talk about where to go from there,"

"I guess that could work,"

Her lips brush my jaw as she smiles.

"Hazel, everything will be okay."

"Thank you," I whisper before her lips make it to mine.

"Let's just have some fun, okay? Before everything goes to shit."

I chuckle lowly.

"Sounds like a plan."
