Max was exhausted from running. She had been circling the track for two hours while her sports teacher lounged comfortably in his chair, engrossed in reading a magazine.

The redhead silently vowed to skip the next class; otherwise, she might collapse from running like a maniac for so long.

As she absentmindedly glanced up at the bleachers above the track, she spotted a familiar silhouette. Max slowed down a bit and squinted to get a better look.

- "Jane," she murmured to herself. Indeed, the brunette sat in the middle of the bleachers, observing the entire Mayfield class as they ran themselves ragged.

Max was surprised and wondered why Jane was doing this. Not that she didn't want to see her, but surely there were more interesting things to do than watch sweaty teenagers suffer.

The readhead came to a halt, drawing curious glances from her classmates. She glanced at the teacher to see if he was paying attention to anything on the field. Of course not, he was engrossed in his newspaper.

Then Max made her way toward the exit of the track and climbed the bleachers to reach Jane. The latter turned her head, their eyes locking. Max felt her heart race before she looked down at her feet and walked toward the other girl.

- "Hi, Max."
Max finally stood next to Jane. She lifted her head, meeting Jane's brown eyes again, this time without averting her gaze.

- "Hi, Jane," she replied. The brunette smiled, hearing her name from the girl's lips. "What do you want?" she asked, still wearing that same smile.

Max thought for a moment. She hadn't really considered what she would say to Jane. She had approached her without thinking, without any specific purpose. Shefelt a bit foolish.

Jane chuckled, freezing the redhead in place. "Don't worry, you don't need a reason to come talk to me. You can sit if you want." The brunette patted the spot next to her.
Max regained her composure and quickly took a seat, eliciting another laugh from Jane.

After a brief silence, during which Max dared not turn her gaze away from the running track for fear of locking eyes with the brunette and losing all her composure, she hesitantly asked:
"And you... what are you doing here? I mean, you don't have gym class with us."

Jane sighed. "I don't know." She turned her head toward Max and studied her. Her red hair fluttered slightly in the breeze, revealing her beautiful blue eyes. Jane called them the oceans. She could drown in them for hours, if it were possible. Even though she didn't often get the chance, those rare moments stayed etched in her mind.

Max, aware that Jane was observing her, turned her head and offered a small smile, which the other girl returned.

"You know, Max, we don't really need a reason to do something."
