Chapter 15

Jane and Max stood hand in hand, waiting for the bell to ring. They no longer cared about the prying eyes, despite the rumors circulating in the high school about their public display of affection.

A small group of teenagers watched them from a distance, whispering and casting disapproving glances. Jane, accustomed to being almost invisible in the school, was unfazed. However, her girlfriend, Max, struggled to ignore the gossip behind her back. The sudden attention focused on her made her anxious.

Max gently withdrew her hand from Jane's, who noticed it immediately.
"Are you okay?" Jane asked, placing her hand on Max's shoulder.
"Yeah," Max replied, glancing at the group that was whispering, then refocused on Jane. "I'm fine, don't worry."

Jane furrowed her eyebrows and looked in the same direction as Max. She noticed the group of teenagers and sighed before redirecting her attention to the redhead.
"Do you want to go somewhere else?"

Max hesitated, not wanting to upset Jane, but the stares weighed heavily on her. That's when Mike and Will arrived. The taller one rolled his eyes upon seeing Max, while the one with the bowl cut smiled at the two girls before striking up a conversation.

Max, preoccupied with the group that was intensely watching them, wasn't really listening to the boy's words.

Suddenly, one of the girls from the group shouted, "Don't get close to them, or you might end up like them!"
The other teenagers chuckled. Max felt a lump forming in her throat and lowered her gaze to the ground.

Mike sighed in annoyance and raised his middle finger before turning to Jane. The brunette had her head turned towards her girlfriend, her expression sad. After a few seconds, Max readjusted her hair and quickly walked away, leaving the three friends surprised by her sudden departure.
