Callie's POV~
24 hours later------------
"Ugh!" I screeched as I destroyed each walker's brain stems one by one.
There had to be at least 150 of them but there were only 10 left. "I kept imagining Carl's face on the walkers to make it easier to kill the poor innocent people in this awful state.-----------------FLASHBACK-------------
Running. Running to where I could go to feel safe again. Running to where I could dream that everything was okay. Carrying my injured 7 year old sister to safety. Not looking back to my once house blaring with flames. I was 12 then. My hair shoulder length, freshly cut only a couple weeks ago. Back when society was intact. Back when all I had to worry about was my 5th grade crush liking me back, or what shirt went with what skirt.
"Callie?" My Sister waking up from her nightmare whispered. "I'm here, Megan. Don't worry." We were all on our own. Up in an abandoned treehouse where all of the teens on the block would go to smoke and have sex. "I'm scared." "Me too." I whispered back to her. "Where's mom and dad? They never followed us." I didn't know how to tell her that our parents never made it out of the house. That they were burned to death.
"They're in a better place, Megan." "Where? Can we go there too?" "No not yet, Meg." I said with sadness in my voice. "Then when Callie?" "I don't know." I said with a tear falling down my cheek. She laughed. "Your eye water is cold." She said laughing even harder than before. I chuckled at her "so funny" comment and wiped my tears away. "Get to sleep Meg. It's going to be a long day tomorrow.
2 years later--------------------------------
"Callie?!" My now 9 year old sister yelled from below the treehouse. "Yeah, Meg?!" What do you want for your birthday? I'm thinking about going on a run with you to get you something special." I was turning 14 today. It was January 31, 2013. "Aw, Meg, you don't have to get me anything. You being here with me is enough for me." It would have been my twin brother's birthday too, but he didn't make it out of the house alive either.
"Okay, fine!" My sister yelled jokingly. "Get to the treehouse, now!" I whispered to Megan. "Why?" "There's a herd of walkers coming towards us. Get to the treehouse." Megan finally started climbing up the treehouse when her foot slipped and she fell 3 feet to the ground. "Megan, no!" I screamed. A walker bit into her neck and she screamed in pain. Getting up and climbing weakly into the treehouse.
"Megan! What-" "Callie, shoot me." Megan practically yelled. "No, Megan-" "Callie do it! I'm not turning into one of those things! Go!" "Callie, look at me. We all have jobs to do. Yours is to shoot me, now. I love you so much. I want you to keep living life strong. If you live, I live too." "Megan!" I sobbed into her chest. "Please, Callie!" I put my dad's pistol to her head. "I'm so sorry, Megan." Then I shot her.
By now, the walkers were gone. I carried Megan down and started digging her a grave. I finally placed her into the hole. She looked so peaceful, so worry free. "That first night we got to this treehouse, and I told you about the safe place mom and dad went, you called it camp daisy." I sighed. "We all have jobs to do. Yours is to get to camp daisy. I love you, Meg." I then tossed dad's pistol into her grave and started piling the dirt back up.
I found two sticks and tied them together with a tree stem. I sat by the grave for hours, not knowing what to do.
"Happy birthday to you.
Happy birthday to you.
Happy birthday to..... Me..
Happy birthday to me."I sang sadly to myself on a loop.
------------------REALITY-----------------
I collapsed to the ground almost having a heart attack. I curled up in a ball next to the gate and found myself sobbing like a maniac. "Callie?" I heard Carl's voice ring out over the walker groans. I buried my face into his neck and hugged his torso so tight that he probably couldn't breathe.
"Carl...I.....need...to....take you....somewhere..tomorrow." I managed to get out in between sobs.
I was going to take him to the treehouse where my sister was buried.
I remembered that I should be furious at Carl, but right now, all I needed was love.
