Chapter Six

I wake the next morning with a smile on my face and a fluttering feeling in my chest and enthusiasm for the day ahead, rather different from the usual exhaustion and lack of will.

After eventually leaving the warm comfort of my bed and into the freezing November morning air, I head into the bathroom, stripping down and stepping into the shower.

As the warm water runs through my hair and down my body I let my thoughts wonder to the events of the previous night, recounting every detail such as the way his eyes sparkled when he smiled, or how he would carefully articulate every word coming from his heart shaped mouth, and how my whole world had somehow brightened when he told me that I was the only girl he could see.

I quickly wash my hair before stepping out of the shower and wrapping a towel around my body and putting my hair into a bun.

I slide on some white skinny jeans, a black tank top and a dark grey off-the-shoulder cut sweater with my signature black converse, before drying my hair and putting it back into its bun -leaving a few wisps loose around my face- applying winged eyeliner, swiping on some mascara, and heading out the door with my shoulder bag slung around my shoulder containing my skates.

Hopping into my small 1945 cabriolet Volkswagen Beetle, I put my gym bag on the passenger seat and start the engine. I stream Bluetooth through my phone to the speakers I placed in the boot of my stereo-less car, and the familiar intro of Yiruma fills the car. My fingers tap the wheel in harmony with the tune of "River flows in You" and I feel my body relax at the calming melody.

I eventually arrive at the ice rink, where I park my car and glance at my phone to see 6:30 across the screen.

Perfect, just in time for Carl to open up I think to myself just as a small Holden pulls up aside me.

My fathers old friend steps out of his deep blue car before flashing me a small smile.

"Good morning Hazel." His light brown eyes are masked with something I can't decipher, before he walks to the entrance and unlocks the door, holding it open for me to walk through.

"Morning Carl." I smile and nod my head in a thank you as I walk through the door, the cold air hitting my face and bringing the familiar feeling of adrenaline and anticipation running through my body.

I take my time stretching my legs and body while Carl unlocks the gate to the rink.

I make my way to the benches to sit while I put on my white skates, tightly tying them up, then removing my jacket and stepping onto the solid ice.

I take a few steps further, adjusting to the new ground beneath me before taking a long stride, followed by another, and another and soon I was effortlessly gliding across the ice.

Circling the rink a few times, I naturally begin to crossover as I go around, transitioning to skating backwards and forwards.

I smoothly conduct a cherry-flip followed by a Biellmann spin, while Carl watches on the sidelines, slowly clapping as I finish.

"Amazing as always Hazel," Carl smiles, "Are you still playing piano?".

"Thank you, and yes I am." I return the smile as his eyes flash with sadness.

"Your dad would be so proud of you," his face contorts in anguish, "It's been five years, today."

I feel my face drop at the mention of his death and my breathing hitches as I'm hit with a pang of guilt.

It's been five years since cancer had taken my father life, and I had completely forgotten.
