Dean gripped the leather steering wheel tighter the more he thought about the upcoming weekend. Taking care of the baby was stressful enough, but now Castiel wanted to throw a party for his "half-birthday". After running a stop sign, Dean decided to ignore the matter until he got home. It was getting late and Dean wanted to spend some time with his son before bedtime.
Dean parked the Impala in the driveway and walked up to the front door. "Hey, I'm home," Dean said as he took off his leather jacket. He was greeted by his son's tearful screams, filling the house with noise.
"Thank goodness you're here," Cas whined, running to Dean, a tantruming Bobby squirming in his arms. "He just won't take his bottle. Do you think you could help?"
"Anything for my baby," Dean said, taking the baby into his own arms. Holding Bobby in his right, Dean grabbed the bottle in his left arm and starting walking up the stairs to the nursery. Dean wasn't really a big fan of engaging with Bobby in front of people, especially Cas and Sam.
Dean cradled Bobby close to his chest and offered the bottle to him. The baby angrily accepted and squirmed more. Dean shushed him and started rocking, gently swinging his hips back and forth. This calmed the baby down a little but he was still too worked up to go to sleep.
Dean started humming softly until he realized the song he was humming. He gradually increased his volume until he quietly started singing. He knew the words by heart; there was no need to think about what came next. The words fell out of his mouth and hung in the air, delighting anybody lucky enough to hear.
Dean payed no attention to whether or not the baby was asleep, he just sang and sang and kept singing until the very last line where he lay the sleeping baby in his crib.
"Hey...
Jude."Dean left the room and met Castiel in the kitchen. "Is he down?" Castiel asked.
"Yep," Dean set the almost empty bottle on the counter and checked the clock. It was almost eight thirty. "Listen, I was thinking about the party-"
"Yes," Castiel interrupted. "I need your opinion: should we have the party here with a yellow theme (to match the kitchen) or at the park with a blue theme?"
"That's the thing, Cas. Why are we throwing a party at all?"
"Because our baby is six months old on Saturday. That is more perfect than anybody could imagine, the way the date falls on the best party day of all time."
"I don't know it just seems kind of...useless. I'm all for a first birthday party but what's so special about a half-birthday?"
"Because Bobby can have his first solid food at six months."
"So why can't we just give him a slice of cake at home without a party?"
"Oh no no no. Bobby isn't having cake! He's only going to be six months old! No cake until the first birthday."
Dean looked confused. "What kind of a birthday party doesn't have cake?"
"Our son's half-birthday party."
"Well there will at least be cake for the adults, right?"
"Nope." Castiel crossed his arms.
"Maybe I'll pick up an extra shift on Saturday," Dean said, walking out of the kitchen.
"Why would you do that?" Cas yelled at him.
"So I don't have to go to your damn party!"
"Fine!" Cas said, holding back tears. "I guess I'll go with blue at the park." But Dean was already too far away to hear him.
