Dean was a bit of a late riser. His shift at The Garage started at eight on weekdays, yet it wasn't until seven-thirty when he opened his eyes and welcomed the morning to his body. Dean grunted as he stretched his muscles and loosened his joints. He glanced at the digital clock on his nightstand when the realization of his tardiness sunk in.
"Goddammit," he moaned, rolling out of the bed and putting clean pants on. He walked over to the dresser where a black shirt was hanging loosely out of a drawer. Dean reached down, rose the shirt to his nose and inhaled. As he wasn't greeted by deathly smells, Dean pulled the shirt over his head and went down to the kitchen for breakfast.
As usual, Castiel was in the kitchen with breakfast already made. "You're going to be late," he said as Dean rushed to the fridge to grab a beer.
"I know, I know," Dean swigged his drink and sat at the table.
"Paul's not going to be happy about that. You've already been late six times this month."
"I'll just tell him it was the baby again."
"Dean, you haven't been late because of the baby at all."
"That's not what I've been telling Paul!" He took another sip and looked over at his son's smiling face.
Bobby sat in his highchair, sucking on a half-full bottle and pulling off his socks with his feet. His chubby legs hung over the footrest of the highchair, dangling like fishing lines.
"I'm going to tell Paul what's really going on," Castiel warned.
"Baby," Dean whined. "Please don't do that! This job is really important. It's our only income source."
"I'm sure my old job would take me back if you got fired."
"Sure," Dean said sarcastically. "You're going to support both of us and a baby on a gas station minimart salary."
"Let's not fight," Cas said. "I really don't want to fight. Just go to work, okay?"
"Alright, I'm leaving." Dean pulled on a leather jacket, kissed Bobby on the head, kissed Cas on the cheek, and left the house out the front door. Cas pulled Bobby out of his highchair and carried him over to the window.
"Bye, daddy," Castiel said, waving one of Bobby's chubby hands. Bobby squirmed in Cas's arms and dropped his empty bottle on the floor. Cas shifted the baby and picked up the bottle. "Good job, buddy. You ate all your breakfast."
It wasn't unusual for most mornings to go this way. Dean was always late, Castiel always made breakfast and got the baby ready and cleaned the house and did the laundry and kept Bobby entertained. Cas placed Bobby on the floor in the enclosure of a colorful plastic fence. This way Cas could do a few things around the house while Bobby played with his toys.
After he had cleaned up the house, Cas pulled his phone out of his pocket and sat on the couch next to a notebook with names scribbled on it. Cas dialed a number on his phone and waited for the recipient to answer.
"Hey, Sam. How are you? Great, great. I'm just calling to remind you that Bobby's half-birthday party is on Saturday. Do you think you're going to be able to make it? Okay, great. So when are you flying in? Great, we're so excited to see you. Bye," Cas hung up the phone and sighed. "Only seven more calls to go.
Bobby cooed and threw a plush rabbit at the wall of his fence. Cas got up and pulled Bobby out of the enclosure. He kissed the baby on the head and sat on the couch with him on his lap. Cas continued making calls confirming attendance to his son's half-birthday.
Five people were able to make it and Cas sighed in relief when the clock read three. "Nap time, Bobby," he said.
