Dedication - To the ones who are brave enough to love like fire. "Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, it's jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame." - Song of Songs 8:6
Chapter One
The stars are always there. Something to wish on. A beautiful sight to look at. They are something I admire, but tonight they are different. Instead of twinkling lights, I see burning balls of destruction. They send fear, confusion—
"What are you looking at?"
And apparently a thorn in my side. I breathe in the cool air composing myself for my next job.
"I'm assessing the plan one more time. Are you sure you know what your job is?"
He glares at me. An expression of are you really asking me that question. "Of course I know what my job is," he starts. "Stay by the door. Send the signal if something is wrong. Don't get caught." He points to each of his fingers, counting off each job.
"Make sure you focus on that last one." I have been stuck with my partner John for two years now. I have faith in him, but trust on the other hand doesn't come easily in our house. I can only trust myself. I am the only one I can count on, so leaving John with the job of lookout makes me want to rip my skin off at the nervousness of his "expert watching abilities." I guess I also wouldn't like it if he were the one to steal the four million dollar diamond from the Exploratory Museum, so I'll take
what I can get."
The wind shifts, blowing a crisp bite at our faces. Squinting my eyes, I hover my hand over my forehead. There, I see it. The grand stone entrance sign of the Exploratory Museum. An attraction it is, and one I am glad for. At least this location was easy to find.
"We're almost there," I whisper. Pointing ahead of us, I start assessing the plan with John. "Go that way one more block and meet me at the back door. I'll let you know when I get inside. Two knocks."
We nod our heads in agreement. Set a diversion. Draw attention away from yourself.
That is what my father, Damian, always taught me, but it's been a long time since he's taught me anything useful. I passed every test whether physical or mental whether I was sick or well. After that, nothing. I was then sent out to be the ruthless spy and thief I am today, or the spy and thief he made me. But tonight is about agility. Tonight is about being invisible. A shadow in the night, and if there is anything I can do, I can disappear.
I match my breathing and steps making myself as silent as a spider as I round the corner. I slowly draw the pin from my pocket hidden in the sleeve of my jacket. I fluff the heavy leather around me to seem as big as possible before I reach the pin to the lock.
Conceal yourself. Don't let anyone know or even guess at your identity. At the thought, my hair pulls at my scalp. It had been braided so tightly to my head and wrapped around to make me appear as if I were a boy.
