Jesse shoved him to the ground and smirked. Matthew scrambled to his feet and glared at him. I bit my lip to suppress my laughter as he failed to look intimidating. He was such a joke. Even clowns had more dignity.
Jesse brushed past him and scooped me up in his arms. I gazed into his eyes, feeling a surge of longing. I missed him so much, his touch. How could I ever win him back? It seemed impossible. He had made it clear that he loved her, not me.
He sat me down on the passenger seat and got behind the wheel. The drive was silent until I broke the ice.
"Where are we going?"
"Back to my place. I can't leave you here with him."
"B-But Jesse--"
"Billie, I don't fucking trust him. I'll drop you off there tomorrow if you'd insist."
I closed my mouth, not knowing what to say. I looked out the window.
The drive to his house was quiet and tense. Unlike Matthew, he opened the door for me with a gentle smile. I murmured my gratitude.
"Thank you."
"Billie, don't thank me," he chuckled. I flashed him a weak smile and followed him inside. His house was enormous, like a palace. I felt out of place as he closed the door behind us. "You can stay here for the night."
For the night.
Only for the night. That's all I deserved. After breaking his heart and hurting him so much, he still cared about me. Matthew was nothing like him.
"So this is your room, okay? Is it comfortable enough?"
"Yeah. Thank you so much, Jesse. It means a lot."
"No worries. Just make yourself at home. I'll be in my room if you need me. Just give me a call."
He was about to leave the room and I stopped him. "Hey, Jes."
"How may I not help you?" He said in a playful tone and I giggled. "Just kidding."
"Can I meet your wife and your daughter? If you don't mind."
"Sure, no problem. Mila is already asleep. I'll check on Gab."
I faked a smile and nodded. He left the room and I felt a pang of jealousy and regret.

I left her room and felt a twinge of guilt. I still loved her, but I had a family now. A family that I can't or would never abandon. I walked over to my room and saw Mila and Gab sleeping peacefully on the bed. "Hey baby, you good?" I whispered to my wife, who looked pale and exhausted. "Yeah. Just a little tired." She smiled weakly and kissed me back. I gently brushed my lips against hers and kissed Mila on her cheek.
"By the way, Billie's staying for the night. Something really bad happened there." I told her, hoping she wouldn't mind. "What? What happened?" She asked, concerned. "Babe, remember I told you about Matthew? Her new boyfriend from the past." I said, trying to sound casual. "Mhm. What's up with him?" She said, curious. "Well, Billie didn't really want to tell me anything about it–"
"But for all I know, he's such an abusive bitch. He tortured her in the room with some shit." "Rape?" "Most likely. I didn't really want to ask her about it 'cause you know? It won't really be respectful." "Of course. Does she want anything?" "She said she wanted to see ya." "Sure."
She got up from the bed and decided to check on Billie. Gab looked like she sincerely felt sorry for her, having to deal with that jerk Matthew. Even I fucking wonder what he had done to her.
She walked over to her room and knocked on the door. Both of us heard a faint 'come in' and opened the door. I saw her sitting on the bed, looking sad and lost. Gab went over to her and gave her a hug. Billie hugged her back, surprised.
"Hey, I'm Gabriette and you must be Billie." She introduced myself, smiling. Billie nodded. "Nice to meet you." She said, politely. "Same." Gab said, sincerely.
Gab wished her a good night and I left the room with Gab. I felt a mix of emotions as I closed the door behind me.
“She doesn’t look good at all, babe.” Gab said, worried. “All because of that bastard.” I said, angrily. Gab caressed my shoulder and tried to calm me down. “It’s alright. He can’t hurt her anymore.” She said, soothingly. “Yeah, okay.” I said, sighing.
We walked back to our room and saw Mila sleeping soundly. She was so adorable, with her curly hair and big eyes. She couldn’t talk much yet, she was only three. Gab snuggled beside her and kissed her cheek. I kissed her forehead and went to the shower.
As I showered, I don't know why, but all my thoughts were about Billie. Our first meeting, when I saw her singing on stage and felt a spark. Our first date, when we went to the carnival and had so much fun. Our first kiss, when we were on the Ferris wheel and the fireworks lit up the sky.
Our first trip together, when we flew to Hawaii and explored the island. Our first time, when we made love in the hotel room and felt a connection. The events we attended, when we walked the red carpet and smiled for the cameras. Our break up, which wasn't really bad. It was an amicable one. A flash of memories just hit me, and I felt a surge of pain and regret.
I got out of the shower and saw Mila awake. She looked scared and restless. I got in bed, turning off the lights. "Hey, baby, why are you awake?" I asked as I pulled her into my embrace.
"Scary!" She whimpered. She had been having some nightmares non-stop lately. "Oh, it's okay. Daddy and mommy are here. Nothing can hurt you," I said, kissing her forehead. I sang her a lullaby, hoping to calm her down. I wished I could take away her fears. I wondered what she was dreaming about. Maybe she sensed the tension between me and Billie. Maybe she felt my confusion and guilt. Maybe she knew I was lying to myself. Nah she'd never know. She's only three after all.
I held her in my arms and stroked her hair.
"I now pronounce you as husband and wife." Billie said, in a playful tone. "Mwah!" She kissed me. "I'll definitely make sure that your name would be Billie Rutherford soon, baby girl." I whispered in her ear. She giggled and kissed my cheek. "Mr and Mrs Rutherford, huh?"
"I love you with all my heart and you'd be the one I marry, Billie." I said, cupping my face and kissing my lips. "You'd be the only one I'd live my life with." She said, kissing her like we were actually getting married.
We said forever too soon, I guess. I wish that would've lasted. She was my true love. Billie was. I'm not saying that I don't love Gab, but even though I married her, there hasn't been a day without Billie on my mind.
