We cleaned and put away the dirty dishes, put Goldie to bed, and I got my jacket on. "Come back soon. We're going to miss you. Especially Goldie."Rosette said, giving me a hug. "You're always welcome here. Remember that okay?"Holly hugged me too. I slowly started to realize that I loved hugs. "Stay safe out there princess."Reggie said, giving me a slight nod. "Thanks Reggie."I nodded back to him.
"Do you need me to walk you home? It's getting late." Alex pushed through his other family members and held my hand. "I'll be just fine. Thank you for inviting me. I had a wonderful time." I smiled at him and kissed his cheek.
I tried to walk out the door but has held back by Alex who turned me around. "Really? Just a kiss on the cheek?" He smiled at me, holding me tightly. I could see Holly ushering the others to the bedroom to give us privacy. "Bye you guys!" I shouted before they could get out of sight.
"Bye dear! Good luck with that one." Holly said, disappearing behind a wall. "Now about that kiss." Alex said, leaning down to kiss me. I kissed back and we both sat there for a minute. When we finally pulled away I looked around the cozy house one last time. I was going to miss this.
"Goodnight, I'll see you tomorrow. I love you." I said one final goodbye. "I love you too. Be safe" He placed a last kiss on my forehead and finally let me go.
When I walked outside I had realized just how late it was. The street lights were lit with fires and the streets were empty. I prefer the town at night. It's far more peaceful than having to make your way through a crowd.
I slowly make my way back home, passing the large bridge and long dirt road. I finally reached the maid door and made my way in, escaping from the cold. I hung up my coat and headed up the stairs.
My father was waiting outside my bedroom door for me. "How did it go?" He asked, his silhouette fuzzy in the darkness. "They said no. I'm not to be married to him." I said, staying in place, trying to make out his expressions.
"You arrived rather late. You missed opening your gifts." He stated, walking twords me. "I can open them tomorrow father. I'm sure they are all wonderful." I replied, trying to end the conversation. I was suddenly very thankful I had tucked my necklace away under the bed Kline of my dress.
"Well, I won't keep you any longer. I'm sure you are very tired. Go to bed now child" he spat, passing me and heading down the hallway behind me. I quickly rushed into my room hoping no maids were in there.
Luckily enough, they were no where to be seen and it hadn't looked like anything had been moved. I checked under my bed to see that the small box of letters from Alex was still there as well.
I let out a sigh of relief and got dressed for bed. How long could we keep this up? Could I wait until my father died to marry Alex? No, he was still reasonably young and that wouldn't happen for years. Unless... No. Had I really just considered killing my own father? Maybe.
I did know one thing for sure. I refused to marry anyone but Alex. I didn't care how rich or handsome. I will not be anyone else's bride but his.
Holly and her children were all lovely people. I wished I could go around there more often but how? I could tell father I was apart of a sewing group. That would get me out of the house at least once a week.
Maybe I could talk with Alex about it and we would figure it out. I really did love his family I only wish they were my real family. Maybe one day. I find that a lot of my future is filled with maybes but I don't mind much. After all it's about the journey not the destination right?
