It took me a second to register what Mike had said to me. I felt a rush of adrenaline through my body after hearing what he whispered to me. It wasn't a reaction I expected from myself. It took me back to when Carter would compliment me, except it was a bit different. My body had a more positive reaction to hearing Mike's words versus when Carter would say something to me.
My eyes shifted up to his as I stood still, not knowing what his next would be.
"Thank you." I responded, letting out a shy laugh as I tucked a few loose strands of hair behind my ear.
My mind wondered if he was going to make an actual move or were we just going to stare at each other with desire.
"It's snowing." I said, realizing the white specks falling outside of the store window was in fact snow. My legs practically ran to the window and stared out at the beautiful snow falling on the pavement. I had seen snow a plenty of times, but there was something different about this snow fall. Maybe it was because I had just received an overdue compliment from the person I wanted, or it was just because the night sky and snow somehow paired well together.
"C'mon." Mike said, opening the door so that we could go outside and look at the snow. I followed him out into the cold in just my white cardigan, as he held the door open for me. My eyes darted up to the sky as the snow started heavily pouring down on me. I quickly looked over at Mike and his denim jacket was covered with white specks.
"What?" he said, obviously realizing I was staring at him with a funny look on my face.
"Your jacket." I responded, leaning over to dust a few snowflakes off his jacket. Before I could reach my hand away from his jacket, I felt him grab my hand so it wouldn't pull away. He managed to pull me closer to him and I watched his cold breath. He was still holding my one hand as I placed my other hand in his free one.
There was nothing that could beat this moment. There was snow falling down on us and our eyes were both glued to each other, while also holding each other's hands. I felt Mike's hands run through a few strands of my hair, seemingly getting some of the snow out of it.
"I'm sorry for what I said to you before you went to New York."
"It's o-"
"No, it's not. I kept thinking about you when you were gone. I was so mad at you but also I felt so lonely not having you around."
I looked down at my snow covered shoes and up at him as I could see the hurt in his eyes.
"Again, I'm sorry for missing the pageant. I regret it."
"I know you do, Miles." he whispers to me.
There was a silence between us. Our small "fight" or "disagreement" had finally ended and a white flag was raised.
"You're just unlike anyone I've ever met and a part of myself felt like things were too good to be true. You showing up at my work drunk, babysitting for me, and just how easy it was for me to tell you about my past and the shit I've been dealing with. I haven't found that in anyone." Mike rattled off.
I felt him lean in and press his forehead against mine.
"I just want to protect you, not fight with you." he whispered, as I felt his hands cup my face and he finally leaned in and pressed his lips against mine.
Our lips colliding felt like the most natural thing I had experienced. The rhythm of our lips was seamless. The longer the kiss went on the more desire and passion was behind it. The snow felt as if it was falling heavier on us as our kiss went on.
Once we both pulled away, our eyes connected as a smile cracked on my face.
"The most beautiful girl and the best kisser." Mike said, leaving a kiss on my forehead as he slipped his hand into mine.
I couldn't help but smile. I had become speechless after the kiss and just wanted to walk around all of Hurricane with a massive smile on my face.

After my snowy kiss with Mike, he had to leave to go to his job. A part of me wanted to just show up with a bottle of wine at his creepy job - but another part of me wanted to just go home and bask in my happiness with a cheesy love movie. Of course I chose to steal one of the imported Italian wines and drive myself to the creepy old pizza joint.
