"Wow," Luke said not taking his eyes off of Avery's maroon dress.

"Really? I wasn't sure about the dress. I mean, I love the color but it's my church dress-" Avery rambled.

"We should head on over. My driver is waiting for us," Luke cut Avery short. "Oh, I got you this," Luke said handing Avery a single sunflower.

"Thank you! That's very sweet of you! I love sunflowers, how did you know?" Avery smiled.

"I didn't," Luke said opening the door to the black Range Rover. "This is Dave, he will be following us around tonight," Luke said gesturing to the bald driver.

"Hi Dave, nice to meet you," Avery politely said.

"Hello," Dave quickly said.

"Alright, so. Are you ready to party?" Luke said trying to make small talk.

"Yeah, I am. I've never gone to a real party before so I don't really know what to expect. It's really good to finally get away from that cafe. I'm really excited," Avery admitted.

"I'm glad," Luke said shutting the door behind him. Avery watched Luke walk to his side of the car and he quickly sat down without buckling his seatbelt.

"You know. You're the first person that came in the cafe that I didn't have to read the specials to," Avery laughed. "I mean, unless you want to hear them?"

"I'm fine."

"So. How long have you been in the band."

"About four years now. Almost five."

"Must be cool to travel the world. I want to do that sometime, maybe with the peace corps or something. Do you ever miss being home?"

"All the time," Luke said as he wiggled his lip ring with his tongue.

Luke knew Avery was too nice, she didn't deserve what he was about to put her through. Luke looked over at Avery, and for the first time he noticed her big light brown eyes that sparkled against the setting sun, and big smile that was so genuinely sweet and shy. He could tell she was beyond excited for the party, for reasons he didn't know. Avery looked up at Luke who was staring at her and gave him a half smile. Luke quickly looked away and out the window anxiously shaking his leg.

"You know, tomorrow is my birthday," Avery smiled.

"No fucking way?" Luke said looking at Avery again. Not only was he potentially going to ruin her night, he was also going to ruin her birthday.

"Yeah, I'm going to finally be 18," she smiled.

"Our birthdays are pretty close then. I'm turning 19 July 16th," Luke smiled.

"Well, happy early birthday," Avery excitingly sang.

"Dave!" Luke shouted at the driver. "How far are we from the club?"

"Two blocks," Dave said reading his GPS.

"Drop us off here, we are going to walk the rest of the way," Luke insisted.

"Yes sir," Dave said driving to the side of the road and Luke hopped out instantly.

"Good luck," Dave said to Avery immediately after Luke shut his door.

"Thank you?"

"You're a nice girl, don't let-" Luke opened the door cutting Dave short.

"Let's go," Luke said gesturing for Avery to get out of the car.

"Why are you so determined to walk?" Avery laughed.

"It's a nice day, and Dave was starting to annoy me," Luke said brushing his hand through his blonde hair.

"Dave wasn't talking..."

"You know. You have real nice lips," Luke said turning around to Avery.

"What?"

"Yeah, are you wearing any lipstick? It looks like it's rubbing off," Luke said as he towered over Avery.

"Oh. Should I put some more on?" Avery blushed.

"Yeah..." Luke said.

"Oh. Okay," Avery said pulling a tube of lipstick from her purse.

"Hey, give me it. Let me try putting it on you," Luke said grabbing the lipstick tube from her hands. "Hold still," Luke said as he leaned down to Avery's level and started to put it on her.

"Um. Luke?"

"Yeah?" Luke said still focusing on putting her lipstick on.

"You're missing my mouth. You're supposed to put it on the lips."

"Alright, it's all better now," Luke said smiling at the mess he made on Avery's face, knowing if she couldn't win him the Dogfight, her new makeup definitely would.

Avery pulled out a small hand mirror from her purse and instantly laughed at Luke's work. "Oh my gosh," Avery laughed. "You put makeup on about as good as I do. It's alright, I think I can fix this," Avery said still laughing. "Better?"

"Never mind. You look fine," Luke smiled. They continued to walk toward the club in silence, exchanging polite smiles every few steps. Avery's heart banged against her chest. She would have never guessed her day would end with her going on a date with someone like Luke. But, she couldn't help but feel like everything she said annoyed him. His short responses, and the way he wouldn't look at her for more than 5 seconds.

"Hey, Luke. Are you sure my makeup looks fine? I still feel like it's all over my face," Avery laughed.

"Avery. Let's skip the party. We can just go watch a movie and grab a bite to eat instead?" Luke asked as he saw the club ahead.

"You don't want me to go with you anymore?" Avery quietly said.

"No! I do. It's just-"

"You don't want your friends to meet me do you?" Avery said looking down.

"No, that's not it. It's just," Luke stuttered trying to think of an excuse. "I don't know if this would be a good party for our first date, that's all."

"It's a party! Of course it will be fun for a first date. Not that I have any experience with dating," Avery laughed.

"Wait, this is your first date ever?" Luke panicked.

"Yeah, but don't let that ruin this! I just want to have a good time at a fun party," Avery insisted.

"Alright," Luke nodded. "I just hope you have fun," Luke smiled and lead Avery into the club.
