Bratix was in shock from what he heard. Had he, a simple smiths son became a dragon rider? The crowd roared with yells and clapping congratulating him.
As he stood there taking it all in Vanir looked smiling and said " come back to our tent there is much we must discuss before we leave."
Bratix was slowly coming back to his senses and began asking questions as he walked with Vanir saying " when will my dragon hatch, how big to dragons really get, and how to I know if its a boy or a girl?"
"I will answer all your questions in due time bratix" Vanir said. Bratix shook his head but said no more as they walked off the stage and began moving through the crowd. As they walked through the sea of people who were congratulating and cheering for the new rider, Bratix saw Nicholas standing alone towards the back with a look that was a mix of envy, sadness, and hatred. Almost as fast as Bratix had seen Nicholas he was gone lost I'm the large crowd.
Once they had gone through the crowd and made it to the elves tents Vanir took Bratix inside one of the tents and sat with him.
Vanir started of saying, "I will answer your questions to the best of my knowledge and answer any more you have afterwards."
Bratix nodded his head and Vanir began speaking again saying "dragons are amazing creatures, there is nothing more graceful or beautiful than a dragon in flight high in the sky. Now as for how long it takes an egg to hatch can depend, dragons stay in there eggs until the right conditions come along or in the case of rider dragons, they find there riders. Sense this egg has began hatching for you it should only take it three to five days to hatch. As for how big they get, dragons never stop growing and our immortal so they have no limit in size, some of the older dragons were mistaken for hills due to there size. You won't be able to tell if your dragon is a male or female until it can tell you. As I said earlier dragons our immortal and once a dragon hatches for there rider they to become immortal. Now I think I have answered everything you asked me and then some, is there anything else?"
Bratix sat in shock as Vanir's last statement sunk in, he was immoral.
Bratix looked from the egg to Vanir and back a few times before asking " am I really immortal, I can't die?"
"That's right besides a mortal wound or disease that is" Vanir stated
Bratix couldn't believe it was true, these types of things were supposed to only be in myths and legends.
Vanir pulled Bratix out of his thoughts when he asked " do you have any family?"
Bratix answered " only my father, my mother passed when I was born."
Vanir nodded and said " we need to find your father to tell him we will be leaving in the morning."
Bratix was surprised they were leaving so soon and asked "tomorrow, Why so soon?"
"We have a long journey back to Duweldenvarden and we still need to go to the other cities and see if the other egg will hatch" Vanir said.
Bratix saw why they needed to leave so soon but still loathed it, he wasn't so sure if he was ready for the adventures that were ahead for him. After a moment more of sitting, Bratix stood up and walked out of the tent heading towards his home with Vanir in tow. Once they reached his house they went inside and found his father sitting at the kitchen table looking slightly confused.
"Who is that Bratix, and what do you have in your hand?" his father asked sounding slightly panicked.
Bratix smiled nervously and said "this is Vanir and this is my dragon, he began hatching for me when I touched him.
Bratix had never seen his father at a loss for words but that is what his father was as he almost whispered, "are you sure?" Bratix nodded and his father looked down and shook his head. After a moment he looked back up shiny-eyed and said " well I honestly didn't think you would become the next rider but I'm proud of you son, I take it as you will be leaving soon?" Vanir stepped in and explained when they would be leaving to his father.
His father sighed and said "I knew you would be leaving soon but I didn't think it would be this soon I suppose you have to grow up some day though, can you stay here tonight?"
Vanir nodded and said "of course, we will be here at dawn so be ready Bratix." and with that Vanir said his goodbyes and left them to enjoy there time together.
Bratix and his father stayed up late into the night talking of old times and what was to come. They finally went to bed a few hours before sunrise but it felt like Bratix had just fallen asleep when a his father was waking him saying " the elves will be here soon."
After getting up and checking his pack once more he sat with his father in silence and waited. When the elves finally came they were riding horses with a six tied in the back for him.
Bratix packed his horse and was about to leave when his father pulled him into an embrace saying "make me proud son and don't forget to visit every now and again."
Bratix smiled and said " I will and don't worry i'll be back as soon as I can be."
Bratix climbed onto his horse with his egg in his lap and waved to his father as they began trotting away. As he tried keeping his balance on his house he thought of all that was to come and a mixture of anxiety and excitement courses through him.
