Idiotic.
That's how I've felt over the past month.
I mean how could I be so fucking blind?!
How did I not see through her little act?
For fuck's sake, I even let her meet my daughter!
I take another large swig of whatever alcohol I can find in my father's cupboard while staring blankly at the TV.
No, I don't drink in front of Lia.
I'm not an idiot.
As soon as I put her to bed, I'm down here in the living room...sulking like a moron.
"Okay, I can't watch this anymore...what the fuck are you doing?" My brother says, snatching the bottle from my hands.
"What does it look like?" I snap.
"Honestly, it looks like you're throwing your fucking life away."
"I'm fine."
"Are you? Because it seems like you're fucking drowning all your emotions with expensive liquor."
"Am I not allowed to have a drink?" I scoff.
"Technically, no."
"Shut up and give me the bottle."
"No! I'm sick of watching you slowly kill yourself."
"You're being dramatic."
"Am I? Lia is even starting to notice."
That sentence immediately causes me to freeze and I look up at him.
"What are you talking about?"
"She came into my room the other night when you were passed out drunk on the couch. She was crying because she had a bad dream and when she saw you passed out, she tried to wake you up but you wouldn't budge...she thought you were dead, Harlan. Do you know how long it took me to assure her that you were just sleeping?!" He yells and I flinch a bit.
I didn't think she noticed.
"Look, I get that you're upset about what Margaux did but you need to try to move on for Lia's sake. I think you've moped around enough, get your shit together, and be there for your kid." He says sternly and I sigh.
Does he seriously think I haven't tried?
I was doing somewhat okay before school started.
At least I didn't have to see her then but now I see her every fucking day!
And it doesn't help that we sit near each other in calculus.
I can smell her Dior perfume all the way from my seat.
She's changed.
She's lost her light.
She's no longer wearing her designer skirts and sweaters, instead she's always in baggy pants and giant hoodies.
