Three hours later, Julia comes out. "Hey, Thomas," she says tiredly, "Kara's out of surgery. We managed to stabilize her, but we don't know when she'll wake up or even..."
"Don't say it," he whispers, "I can't...Ellie..." "M...may we see her?"
"Yes, but like I said she's not awake. She'll be able to hear you though, so talk to her. It might help her wake up."
Thomas nods and turns to Ellie. "Hey, Ellie," he whispers, "wake up. Kara's out of surgery. We can go see her, if you want."
"Huh?" she mumbles sleepily, "Kara? Go see her?"
"Yeah, go see her. She's not awake yet, but Julia said we could go see her. She also said that talking to her could help her wake up."
"Okay, help me there?"
"Of course." He stands up and she follows. Afterwards he maneuvers her to Kara's room. They enter the room and Ellie lets out a soft gasp.
"Kara!" She hobbles over to her and gently takes her hand. "Oh, Kara! Your hand is so cold!" She sits down. "Please Kara, you have to wake up. I..I..still need you. I can't...I won't be able to..." She sinks down onto the floor. "I need...I need you..."
"Ellie," Thomas whispers, "it's okay. I'm here." He kneels down beside her and affectionately embraces her.
She falls into his embrace. "Thomas," she murmurs, "I...I need her. She...I...won't...I can't...I won't know...how to..." She pauses, struggling to find the right wording.
"It's okay, take your time."
"I'm scared."
"I know. I know. I'm sorry I can't do anything to make this better."
"You're here. That helps."
He sadly smiles at her. "I know, but I can't do anything else besides that."
"That's okay. As long as you're here, then I'll be fine."
"Ellie, don't...(sigh)..don't lie to me."
She's quiet. "Oof," she mumbles suddenly. She grabs her stomach, a cold sweat forms on her forehead.
"Ellie, what's wrong?"
"It's nothing..." Thomas scowls at her. (sigh) "The baby..."
"What? Is there something wrong with it?"
"No! God no! It's just kicking."
"Oh, okay. That's good."
"Ouch! God, it hurts..."
"Ellie..."
"Excuse me!" Ellie stands up and stumbles into the bathroom. Thomas immediately stands up and follows her into the bathroom.
"Ellie?" he murmurs, "Are you okay?"
"Does it..." She hurls. "...look like I'm okay?"
"What's wrong? What should I do?"
"Just..." She pants and throws up into the toilet again. "...hold my hair back..."
He does as he's told. After she rids her stomach of food, she sits up and leans against the wall, trying to catch her breath.
"Ellie?" Thomas whispers.
"I'm fine," she mumbles tiredly, "I'm fine."
"Ellie..." he says in a firmer tone.
"Honest, I'm just tired."
"Then rest!"
"But..."
