The first time we heard of this new kind of time was in a negative light in July 2019, when it was revealed that Taylor's only 6 albums as the time "Taylor Swift", "Fearless", "Speak Now", "Red", "1989" and "Reputation" were officially sold to Scooter Braun who owned the rights to the albums and therefore he could do what he wanted. Taylor had no idea what to do and was devastatedas her 7th studio album "Lover" was being released the only album she would own, and that was when Kelly Clarkson advised Taylor to re-record her old music by saying she should re-record the previous songs and add "Brand new art and some sort of incentive so fans will no longer buy the old versions." Taylor went with this idea, and every re-record that has been released, Taylor has sent Kellt flowers. Anyway, after this idea was suggested, Taylor was given permission to begin re-record in November 2020. However, another problem struck in November 2019 when Taylor was not given permission to perform her previous work at the American Music Awards in a statement released. This, in the end, was solved to a partial agreement. The re-records were overshadowed during the start of 2020 when Taylor surprise dropped "Folklore," a Grammy award winning folk classic of an album. Folklore was hinted at in April of 2020 in a cryptic post saying "Not A Lot Going On At The Moment," a phrase seen on Taylor's outfit in the "22" music video. Fans suspected this was hinting at a possible release of TS8, her 8th album, soon to be titled folklore as the caption has 8 letters
This occurred again in November, and swifties were theorising it was to do with the re-records as she was allowed to start re-recording her unowned work. However, Taylor surprised and shook the world yet again, and surprise released "Evermore" (a criminally underrated) masterpiece of an album. Then, during the start of 2021, rumours circulated of a re-recorded version of "Fearless" were going around the internet after Taylor had posted 2 hearts, signalling the colour of the Fearless era. In mid February on good morning America, the new "Taylor's Version" was announced with a fresh cover calling back to the original. What amazing fans even more, though, in the announcement was when Taylor stated that there were going to be 6 previously unreleased songs available along with the Taylor's Version release. Since then, Taylor has broken many records with the re-records. What makes these re-records even more special to fans is reliving the special memories made during the original era. Taylor did occasional promotion mainly through "Red (Taylor's Version)" with guest show appearances and a short film and another music video along with her joining tik tok for promotions AND a performance of SNL. If the end of 2021 proved anything, it's that Scooter Braun was wrong all along. Then, a break in the re-records happened in 2022 due to the release of the smash record "Midnights." 2023, also known as the biggest year of Taylor's career, brought 2 more re-records Speak Now (Taylor's Version) and 1989 (Taylor's Version) These re-records both broke numerous records, one I find the most memorable (as I am chart obsessed) was the most streamed album on Spotify in 2023 with 176 MILLION streams in 1 day and the second highest of all time behind "Midnights" by herself. The re-records are a record-breaking moment in not just Taylor's career but in history.
