THE NEXT DAY..

JACK

I jolt awake at the sound of my alarm clock blaring in my ear, I let out a tired groan and run one of my hands down my face. I reach over and tap the top of my alarm clock making the alarm stop before I climb out of bed. I walk out of my room and into the hallway before heading over to the stairway and making my way down them. As I made my way downstairs I could hear someone moving around in the kitchen. There's a smell of freshly made pancakes in the air which makes my stomach growl in hunger. I walk into the kitchen and I see mom standing in front of the stove, humming a happy tune, as she flips a pancake over in the pan.

I walk over to the coffee pot and pour myself a cup of coffee before taking a seat at the kitchen table. Not too long after I sit down Jay walks into the kitchen looking like he didn't get much sleep last night. He has dark circles under his eyes and his bluish gray hair is in a messy braid, he's also still wearing the clothes he had on yesterday. He takes a seat at the table right across from me, it was obvious that he had trouble sleeping last night.

"Eat up you two." Mom says as she places two plates of pancakes in front of us, making my attention go to her, before she takes a seat at the table.

Jay starts digging into his plate of pancakes right as she places the plate in front of him, I swear he eats like a pig sometimes. I roll my eyes at his behavior before using my fork to cut off a piece of my pancake about to take a bite, but when I glance over at mom I notice that she has a look on her face that I know all too well. It's the same look she has whenever she wants to talk to us about something important, I should have known that something was up.

And of course, I was right, because after a few minutes mom clears her throat to get our attention. I turn my head to look at her but as usual Jay keeps eating, not paying attention to anyone or anything. I kick him in the shin to get his attention which causes him to glare at me in response before finally turning his attention over to mom. We both look at her in curiosity, wondering what she's about to say to us. When she notices that she has our full attention she finally speaks.

"I have some good news," She says with a smile, pausing for a few seconds, before continuing. "I called the school earlier this morning and they said that they are more than happy to let the both of you start school tomorrow."

I nod my head in response while Jay lets out a small annoyed groan, it seems that he's still not over the whole 'moving' thing yet. I take another bite of my pancakes, deciding to just ignore Jays' foul mood, he's just overreacting anyways. The worst thing that could possibly happen is being picked on for being the new kids, which normally isn't actually a problem since I usually intimidate people due to my height, I'm pretty tall for my age.

"...I also wanted to tell you both that I'm going to take you both shopping for school supplies and new school clothes," She says before taking a sip of her coffee, there's a short pause before she continues. "So go get dressed once you're both finished eating."

We don't say anything in response but I could tell, just by looking at him, that Jay wasn't too happy about the situation. I roll my eyes at his childishness before finishing the last couple bites of my pancake. I was actually a little excited about starting school, maybe I'll actually end up making some friends this time. I wonder if I'll meet any interesting people at school tomorrow.
